Where it locks your screen after a certain time?

It depends whether the time out period was set by the IT department or is just a default setting. Depending on the OS you are using Right click on your desktop and go to either Properties or Personalise and go into the screen saver section. There is a setting there to change the time out period, but chances are if it was set by the IT department that option will be greyed out.

How do you mean? Hit ctrl alt del and leave it like that, then cancel when you want to go back?

I am basically out in a clients, logged in under the client and the client is gone for the day. I have no access to usernames and passwords.

The computer is a bit away from me as well and I will not be using it all the time.

Yeah it’s greyed out - but I know it’s 15 minutes so that helps.

Cheers Runty.

I have an old laptop that I want to dump, but want to clear it out first. I cant seem to get into the boot menu (f8, ctrl f11, etc on the dell screen all failing) to restore factory setting, its pretty much a heap of shit at this stage and will barely turn on at all. Is there any alternative way to wiping the drive completely. I watched Prison Break and I saw the dangers of simply tossing a drive into a river and I refuse to get caught out in a similar vein to Michael Schofield.

I’d say there is some history of the dirtiest porn possible on it. No wonder you want to wipe it!

That and the rest.

Careful mate, that’s how Gary Glitter got caught.

I’m hoping this will prevent such a fate pal. I will try kill it with fire if all else fails.

Get yourself second-hand microwave, you know the rest.

Seems a little extreme but does tie into my killing it with fire idea.

A big magnet would probably do the job too.

Do you own a hammer?

A Stove Will Do The finest

As it’s a laptop you should be able to pop out the hard drive easily, bring it to a similar laptop/PC and give it a hard format. Alternatively use a hammer as mac said, however you’d never know when a spare drive might come in handy.

Download and burn gparted onto a disk. You should be able to boot from that and format the drive.

Put it in the boot of your car. Drive over a high cliff at full speed. As you’re going over the edge, open the car door and jump out (that bit’s optional), leaving the vehicle and its contents to plunge into the sea below. The salt water will do awful damage once it gets in at it.
