Question for the techies

Work from a PC and try sort it out there.
Then delete and reload the app.

I have ethernet cable running from my main router in my attic to a secondary one in the TV room; similar setup in 2 other rooms

The INTERNET connection keeps dropping in the TV room for the past few days while other areas are working fine. Restart of router usually solves things but this is tedious. Is it time to replace the router?

The secondary or primary router?

Secondary router. I have ethernet going directly to another TV from the primary router and that’s working no problem. Another secondary router in my office and that is fine too.

I presume you mean an Ethernet switch. They’re cheap and nasty these days and I’ve seen them go faulty. I assume it has five ports. I’ve seen single ports go faulty so moving the ‘faulty’ Ethernet cable to a different port is worth a try.

Next try swooping with the other switch in the other room and see how that works out.

Most of them have flashing lights so you know what ports are active and working.

Yeah it’s a switch I suppose; I think that the ports seem to burn out after a while so I’ll try another port and see does it make any difference. You’d be right in saying that it is a cheap enough bit of kit.

Yesterday the main router in the attic wasn’t connected to the internet; when I plugged out the offending switch, everything was hunky dory again.

Plugged in a CIsco switch I had that I thought had kicked the bucket a couple of years ago but is actually working seamlessly so issue resolved

Spot on.

My tv volume is slurping a little. It came on during the heavy rain but it hasn’t really gone away. Like a signal issue but turns up on recordings and YouTube as well.

Any ideas? I’d be grateful to have it sorted with all the sport on.

Could be anything.

The first thing to check would be all the settings in relation to the sound.
Might be something amiss there.

Have you got any kind of BOX (sat or cable even IPTV) you could plug into it and see if that eliminates the problem and points the problem to the TV itself.

Can you plug a sound system into the phono-output and see it that sorts it.
They’ll also probably be an optical sound output that you could plug into a sound system.

It started working grand again. I’d say it was the rain

Thanks though i appreciate the help

What’s your source signal?
Internet? Satellite? Cable?

Sky a cable runs out the back of it a dish thing on the corner of my house

Do you mean a satellite dish?

They can misalign and lead to poor signal in bad weather, that is, heavy black rain clouds.
On a clear day you should have near 100% signal. Can you check the signal % on a strong transponder like BBC ONE.

If it’s less than 80% I’d guess you need to get it realigned.

MacBook air for my lass as future proofed as possible.
What spec should I go for?
Also 13 or 15 screen size?

Because of software compatibility issues I wouldn’t touch an Apple PC myself. The young lad had one and it’s just thrown there now.

A quick search tells me it has only two USB-c ports, so no standard USB port at all.

She has an iPhone so I don’t fcucking have a clue. I hate this stuff.

Ah, I don’t want to be coming on here annoying you. You know yourself, if that’s what she wants. Apple have increased their market share considerably over the last ten years.

The software compatibility is really only a problem for high end stuff. The young lads is basically thrown there as it couldn’t handle some AI marketing software that he needed for a course. So he took mine.

Just make sure you get her a dual USB stick.

And if she already has iCloud storage with the phone, sure it might be the way to go.
