Nearly all RTE racing should be dropped if you ask me, especially the pointless coverage of things like Cheltenham. If anyone wants it, it’s on Channel 4. They are complaining about falling viewers of racing but shur all the Irish stuff is on ATR with pros like Gary O’Brien hosting it, why would you watch Ted and Noddy?
RTE should just cover the Irish Derby and the Champion Stakes on the flat. Punchestown festival and Leopardstown Christmas at a push. Let TG4 cover the racing in Listowel & Galway. Forget the rest. Cover the Laurels, Derby, Oaks and Leger of the longtails.

I see in The Irish Times that RTE are expecting to announce a c.€60m deficit for 2012 when the accounts are finalised in the next few weeks. It looks grim but they were actually projecting a €57m a deficit due to the once-off cost of the significant redundancy programme completed during 2012 and they’re forecasting a breakeven position for 2013. It’ll be interesting to see how the rest of this year pans out as they’re constantly referencing the depressed advertising market and its impact on their commercial revenues, and there’s no Olympics or Euros/World Cup this summer that would be attractive for companies looking to place ads around the coverage.
But it’s still fairly amusing in the context of that level of deficit that they sent around 7,000 employees to Rome for a week when the new Pope was being chosen. And a load of the shite programmes mentioned last year on this thread are still being broadcast.*
