Re: Champions League - Match Day 4

Might her appearnace have been an issue too Farmer?

She’s in my constituency and she is an excellent politician. She’s not quite as eloquent a speaker as Joe but she’s a great worker and should be elected to the Dil next time - very close last time but she has a larger backing now I think. She has integrity (as does Trevor Sargent - also in the same constituency) which is something so severely lacking in politicians these days.

The Conor Lenihan comment was truly disgraceful. Typical of so many of our politicians though - a smarmy, thick fucker trading off a family name. A complete and utter fool of a man. I really cannot understand the mentality of anyone who would vote for him - but so many people vote based on their parents’ allegiances.

Thats the whole party politics idea - ā€˜he’s Fianna Fail, I don’t care if he is shite I’ll vote for him’. The political system is quite contradictory. You can vote for the representative of the party that you want to get into power or vote for the person in your constitutency that you know will do the best job. This may not be the same person.

From my point of view, I don’t have any allegiance to a political party. My father is a massive old school Fianna Fail man and I would vote Fianna Fail simply to keep him happy. It sounds terrible but I have little interest in who is elected for the most part but it means a lot to him so I help him out. I actually gave my number 2 to an independent in the last local elections unbeknownest to Father Farmer…

PS Cla(i?)re Daly is an physically ugly person upon which there can be no debating

There are very few physically attractive people in politics in this country (and especially in your constituency I’d wager but that’s a different argument). The PD one (Liz O’Donnell?) isn’t bad, but apart from that, you’ve Harney, Mary-Lou, Joan Burton, and although I’m no expert I doubt there’s many birds our age who’d fancy the guys either - just look at our last few Taoisigh for example, Bertie, Bruton, Reynolds. Charlie probably had something about him, but he wasn’t a perfect physical specimen either.

As for your second paragraph, I scarcely know where to start, so I’ll think about it for a few mins and hopefully Rock will come back with a reply and save me the trouble.

I don’t want to be too harsh on any individual (I think I was a little disrespectful to Tommy, not that I’ll be apologising) but I cannot stand people who don’t care about voting but pretend to care about politics. It’s indefensible in my opinion.

Also, while party politics has its weaknesses we should be grateful for PR which at least gives us the opportunity of having diverse voices in the Dil. This system is far preferable to that in the US or UK for example where smaller parties don’t have any sort of national voice.

Disillusioned is the word that sums up my view with Irish politics - doesn’t mean that I don’t care

You may care about politics but you don’t care about democracy enough to vote. That’s disappointing from somebody who is clearly interested.

Higgins only takes the average industrial wage?! What a sucker! Never knew that. I’m not gonna come on here and slate the way big business runs this country, I’ve spent my life trying to get on the corporate gravy train and there’s no way I’d want anyone want to start rockin the boat.

Up capitalism.

Greed is good.

Did you ever see some of the birds that work for the Green Party?

Delicious… http://www.thefreekick.com/board/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif

Very clever Farmer - laughed out loud in work there.

Boat to start rocking the boat?
And why should you care when you want to be on the train anyway?

My auld fellah would be very AP Mc when it comes to politics. He has never openly discussed who he votes for but he would be of FF stock. Similarly on my mothers side theres a strong FF presence going back to the Civil War but the FF tradition has not been beaten into me so I would not blindly vote for them. Following from this and the debate earlier I dont have any trouble distinguishing a candidate from their party.

Last time out in Wexford I was disillusioned with politics in general and the fact that unemployment levels are amongst the highest in Ireland (2nd largest county in terms of unemployment levels per head according to the last census), the lack of real third level options in the county compared to Carlow/Waterford and no ministerial representation in the county meaning that all the main investment and decentralisation projects were going elsewhere. The thing that really pissed me off though was the terrible tales emanating from Wexford hospital where facilities and conditions were beyond appalling with the government planning on scaling things down even further.

As a result I decided to lodge a protest vote Dr Liam Twomey was running as an independent basing his campaign on the hospital issue. He actually got in but then the fooker decamped to FG a few months later. What a waste of a vote! Whatever you say about FF Id take them with their warts and all ahead of these incompetent, inept wasters.

So the fairly safe 2 FF, 2 FG and 1 Lab seats were replaced by a gain for the Independents at the expense of FG and then this was reversed a few months later! Then I became even more disillusioned at the whole scene. To be honest I dont know where my allegiances lie. In Wexford there is also a Sinn Fein candidate building up a support base and now the PDs have enlisted that Colm OGorman guy who exposed the child abuse scandal in the region. It seemed an odd match up to me. A campaigning, charity focused, idealistic bender would surely be more suited to Labour or The Greens rather than a capitalist, right wing operation like the PDs!!!

I need to have a think and a read about this.
