After a tough few days where I very nearly lost it I think that the end is in sight on this job. So I fancy a bit of mid week drinking. From preliminary discussions it seems that Clarkey and Ball Ox are definitely out of the mix whilst Bandgae has expressed a possible interest.
Any other takers? Or am I clutching at straws?
I’ve no interest I’m afraid. Torn between soccer training and a number of other menial tasks that are more appealling to me for some reason.
i didnt say i was outta the mix, i just didnt know if you were going to be hanging around long enough this evening.
im in. was on to hackett there, hes coming too
A good night was had by all last night - all being Bandage and I
Darren Fay is the best full back of all time was one of Bandage’s clangers. I argued Seamus Quinn. After a long debate he agreed that I was right
Don’t misquote me!
My words were ‘Darren Fay is the best full back I have ever seen.’
Given that I was born in 1981 and can only remember football from 1988 onwards when I attended the Meath/Cork final I don’t think it’s that outlandish a comment to make at all.
Darren Fay = Strong, brave, commanding, fast, clever, tight. Everything you could possibly want in a full back.
Within that timeframe Bandage would Mick Lyons not have been regarded as a better fullback for Meath?
IMO Matt Gallagher was the best of the lot. Not the biggest fullback in the country but a superb reader of the game. Also never kicked the ball once in the 92 All Ireland final, always just layed it off. Very cool under pressure.
Probably the end of the Mick Lyons era so in fairness it’s hard to judge the merits of a full back when you’re seven. He was excellent though.
Why is Matt Gallagher not kicking a ball considered a great achievement? It’s a sign of limitation not greatness - as it is with Francie Bellew. I’m not saying it means they’re bad players, but it shouldn’t be heralded as a strength to their games.
it was meant to illustrate that he was a very composed player. Had a bit of skill which means he shouldn’t be in the same sentence as Francie Bellew
To be honest there’s not that much skill to batting the ball away or handpassing it. If he was as composed as you say he was he surely had time to pick a pass out up the field. Again I’m stressing that I’m not writing him off as a bad player or anything - I’m just debating the fact that an example of his greatnes could be his failure to kick the ball.
I take on board your point about kicking the ball being a skill which it undoubtedly is. I suppose the reason he didint kick the ball very often was Donegal as a team didnt kick the ball very often. It was all short handpassing and building the play up from the back rather than playing the ball quick into the forward line.
Yeah fair enough - I can see the reason for the stat I just don’t think it should be seen as particularly complimentary to him.
