Reasons the 1990s were actually shit compared to now

Ah the 1990s, the GOLDEN ERA, when everything was perfect, compared to now, when everything is terrible.

This thread is to try and weave a narrative that the 2020s are better than the 1990s.

I don’t actually believe that, but let’s try it anyway. Let’s shit on the 1990s.

Reason 1: This sort of thing happened in Ireland in the 1990s. It doesn’t happen now.

Reason 2:
There was no Google Maps in the 1990s. There is now.

Reason 3:
Liverpool’s decline in the 1990s. Although the rest of the 2020s is going to mirror that.

Reason 4:
The Taliban took control in Afghanistan. OK this also happened in the 2020s, but still.

Reason 5:
There were maybe 10 hurling matches of consequence per year. Three of those were the inevitable eliminations of Waterford and Dublin and Antrim. So in reality it was maybe seven. At a push. You might get one or if you were very lucky, two more matches of consquence through replays.

Reason 6:
Genocide in Rwanda

Reason 7:
The war in Yugoslavia. We were denied the greatest international football team of the 1990s because of this. And a lot of people were killed.

Reason 8:
You couldn’t book a cheap city break in Prague from your couch.

Reason 9:
Root canals were probably more painful in the 1990s than they are now. But I didn’t have a root canal in the 1990s.

Reason 10: I’ve run out of reasons.

Reason 11: When seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.

Reason 12: The influence of the Catholic Churcb was stronger in the 90’s than it is now.

Reason 13: No longer is homosexuality a criminal offence and gay people now have equality enshrined in the constitution

See I suppose the problem with some of these reasons is the following:

The Troubles existed in the 1990s? Yes but the 1990s also ended the Troubles.

The Catholic Church were more powerful in the 1990s? Yes but the 1990s destroyed the power of the Catholic Church.

Homosexuality was a criminal offence? Yes but the 1990s made it no longer a criminal offence.

Divorce was illegal? Yes but the 1990s made divorce no longer illegal.

There was no Heino Cup? Yes but the 1990s invented the Heino Cup.

Reason 14: Abortion in Ireland was illegal and the 1990s did not make it legal.

Reason 15: You had to have chicken curry half way through a night at a nightclub. This was mandated by the state. I don’t remember it, but apparently this happened. I expect it probabaly didn’t apply to the Asylum.

Reason 17: Life expectancy was lower in the 1990s.

Although that could be a good thing. Less time to ponder the meaninglessness of life.
