Only 5th and 6th class were allowed to watch the Germany match so I became aware of Robbie Keane’s equaliser when I heard the roar. Great novelty getting up at 7 in the morning for the Cameroon match. Was on a school tour for the Saudi Arabia match. The Spain game was a heartbreaker matched by the horrendous weather conditions around Ireland that day.

Turgid performance at home to Russia in the 1-1. Terrible atmosphere and the general reaction afterwards was a tired, cynical low volume grunt.

The Russia game a few months before this was my first game in the old Lansdowne Road. Notable for the only 8 minutes of Richie Sadlier’s full international career. Great times as you say.
