Retiring GAA Stars tribute thread - May cause brain/neck damage

Bumpy O’Hagan

Ger Reid

Gooch was a brilliant player and undoubtedly had a great innings - that 333 against India at Lord’s in 1990 was tremendous stuff.

He tended to mess up in big finals though. His dropped catch against Pakistan in 1992 probably cost his team the World Cup.

I didn’t like him at all as a person as he supported apartheid in South Africa.

Gooch is a Blueshirt.

Peter The Great is a Provo.

Thanks for that link. Some tremendous action there. The sun seemed to shine a lot during the summer of 2000. 2000 is my joint record year for attending matches at Croke Park - I was there 16 times that year.

That early penalty Kerry were awarded and scored in the drawn semi-final against Armagh should not have been awarded - the foul clearly took place outside the penalty area.

The free which levelled it up at the end was very soft.

But two epic semi-finals, so they were, and I attended both. Mike Frank Russell’s performance for Kerry in the replay was majestic.

The two Brians got a fairly raw deal with Armagh in hindsight. They did a huge amount of groundwork with that team.

In an era of puke football, when many of us bemoaned how shit Gaelic Football was becoming, Gooch was at least one beacon of light for skill and a joyful approach to the game. He was a beautiful footballer to watch. Awareness matched with the talent to execute a brilliant pass or point from the tightest of angles. Bravo Colm Cooper, we’ll miss you.

Amazing to see how interested @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy is in some Muldoon giving up his hobby.
Clearly @Nembo_Kid has never played a game of Gaelic Football in his life.

Gooch spent the latter half of his career pissing and moaning at referees, umpires, linesmen and anyone else who would listen. Very little joy on show.

FFS sake, you expect us to read utter nonsense about Gooch’s quality from you when you can’t even differentiate between the stands in Croke Park.

Gway outta that.

This couldn’t be right mate he wasn’t a corner forward?

Jesus Christ this is mad shit.

McConville - Very Good
Canavan - Outstanding
Cooper - The Best

Some fella even said above Cooper was shit because he “lost more than he won”

What’s mad? People having s different opinion to you? Gooch was better than McConville but not Canavan.

Ah here. People saying Canavan was better are just being controversial and looking for a silly debate.

It’s similar to saying Ronaldo is better than Messi, Nadal is better than Federer etc.

Now is there anyone on here who likes winding people up that would be in the Canavan, Ronaldo and Nadal camps ??? Let me think.

Canavan.
Ronaldo.
Federer.

So you’re now changing your basis of Gooch not performing on biggest to comparing him with the contribution of other members of full forward lines in All Ireland finals.

I’ll have a look at thatckater but I can smell the bullshit off its mile away.

Also your belief that Cooper ‘disappeared’ is not a statistic. It’s an opinion.

Same lad who walks around with his Bob Hoskins medal pinned to his collar. a real winner.

I honestly think Canavan was better. I also believe @Nembo_Kid is genuine in his stance on this. I also think Padraig Joyce was better. Gooch struggled too much with the physical aspect of the game and it is a physical game.

I wouldn’t choose quickly between them but I’d lean towards Canavan to be honest.
However @Nembo_Kid sounds very foolish because he’s giving Gooch fuck all credit,

+1. Take the 2015 final for example when Philly McMahon was tight, tough and aggressive from the get go and didn’t even allow Cooper to impress a bit in the first half. McMahon dominated him from start to finish and even outscored Cooper.

He wasn’t half the player in 15 to be fair, I’m sure the Gooch fans here will remember him in his pomp.

Yeah, tipping in a couple of goals against Mayo and the likes.
