Retiring GAA Stars tribute thread - May cause brain/neck damage
Walsh, Wiley and Kelly is the best full back line around at the moment.

McKaigue was very good in the league for Derry although O’Gara gave him a torrid time in the final.
The Dubs full back line is on fire in recent times. Cooper, although he is all over the place, has become one of the best around and ROC already is. If I had to take a unit I’d take Dublin. If I could pick and choose I’d pick Walsh, ROC, Cooper

funny because Philly Macmahon is the one playing out of his skin at the moment and doesn’t get a mention…

Too wild in championship, on recent form he’s a liability (championship that is). Cooper was brilliant and can man mark and attack. A rare talent.

what are you on a about??..Macmahon has been brilliant in attacking sense …he’s so comfortable on the ball… he even turned up in the laois square to set up Connolly’s goal last match…

As for fullbacks, its hard to think of a decent one of note to be honest, Fay obviously, but Gary Fahey of Galway was always a favourite of mine, a fine player.
Seamus Quinn.

Ya but Cooper is a better player in my opinion, has better endurance, is a Better marker and makes better decisions.
I’m not slighting MacMahon, just I think Cooper ha the edge. In fact I would be a fan of his and the genuine hardiness he brings. I’m told he’s a good S&C coach and a great lad as well. It’s just a preference.
If you want to pick MacMahon in the discussion then go right ahead.

John McKeon was better than Seamus Quinn IMO. No fault to Quinn (has the All-Star to his name) but John Mac was superior in the position over time.

McKeon was a classy full back alright Boxty but he made 2 howlers in his time. The heartbreaking last minute goal in the qualifiers to the Ros in 2003 where he let the ball slip out of his hands and then more recently in 2010 (I think) in the Hyde where he completely misjudged the flight of the ball and let Shine in behind to goal.

That said I recall watching Gortletteragh and Drumreilly play in Cloone one summer evening about five years back. Quinn full forward and McKeon full back. A fascinating tussle with the former marginally coming out on top.

That was another great trait of Quinn’s - his ability to play anywhere on the team to a high standard.

Dessie Dolan announced his retirement on RTE Sunday Sport

He’ll always be remembered for that free.

Which one?

Yknow, the one.

bump for @caoimhaoin …doesn’t get the credit he deserves because he is seen as a bit of a gou but the guy has been fookin immense this season and so important to Dublin with the amount of time in he ends up in possession given teams dropping their forwards back against the dubs…finally got some recognition for his performances on Saturday…

If i remember correctly i was saying he was not as good as someone else, not that he wasn’t good.

But the whole Dublin squad have gone up a notch, and he wouldn’t be on it now if he wasn’t going very well.

i think its actually more his footballing ability than actually going well…teams were beginning to sit back against the dubs so you need a good footballer in defense to bring the ball back out…he’s a tidier and pacier Ger brennan and quicker to get things moving while Brennan’s replacement Deveraux offers so much pace tearing up field…its like dublin have moved their whole team up a line to counteract the blanket defence…its all well and good when playing against teams with not too many dangerous forwards …Mayo and Kerry have ran Dublin the closest by taking the game to them and will do the same if they meet again…think Dublin defence will struggle big time if this happens as both teams have enough quality players to do damage if given space…would still have serious reservations about Fitzsimmons as a defender…

yeah it was a comparison to Johnny Cooper if I remember correctly. And I’d agree with that, if I had a choice, I think Cooper is a better ball player too.

Even though i want it to be a Kerry-Dublin final i think it would be a massacre. Kerry are so immobile around the middle that the 2 lads up front, who could do damage to Dublin, will not get near the ball needed to win. I also suspect dublin will ask Flynn and Connolly to drop deeper at times against Kerry. Declan O Sullivan, Maher, Buckley, Sheehan and Moran are all dragging their heels a bit and will get ran over IMO. The half back line is physically weak. Dublin will murder them.

A 70 minute Mayo performance would test them, but ultimately fail i’d say.

And a more disciplined defender over the period of their careers. MacMahon has been good this year though, to be fair.

Ah classic bluffing kev, he’s been predicting Kerry’s destruction for nigh on 6 years now, it’ll have to hit eventually.

Alan Brogan is hanging up his boots. Gutted he had to end it on yesterday - he was one of our great players
