Retiring GAA Stars tribute thread - May cause brain/neck damage

Who is this murphy chap?

O’Neill’s 2005 season is probably the best season any footballer has played in my memory. He was simply unplayable that year, two great feet, strong as an ox and always had an air of unpredictability about him. A real shame about his injuries as we didn’t get to see him at his best for long enough.

Benny Coulter retiring now too. Was a great player carrying a pretty poor Down team for a long time. When he had Clarke with him they really made that team.

Thought he struggled in 2010, he was carrying a lot of injuries around then and had played his best football before that. Great player and a loss for Down, he was some fielder of a ball and would probably had benefited more playing closer to goal but Down needed him out around the middle of the pitch. Think his All Star award in 2010 was more down to him deserving at least one over the course of his career rather than for his displays that year. Along with Dan Gordon he was the heartbeat of the Down team.

Gordon got moved too much…should have been left at midfield or wing forward… had too much football in him to be thrown in full back or put full forward as target man…would have had a much better career if left develop in one position

Agreed, very much to the detriment of his game but for the better of the team given the lack of viable options they had in certain areas. Dan Gordon would have been as dominant a midfielder as was around in his era but he didn’t get to play enough football there. I don’t think he’ll ever get the recognition for as good a footballer as he was due to being pushed around from position to position, injuries and playing for an underachieving county.

Coulter was well worth an All-Star in 2010.

McComiskey was more deserving for one.

Unbelievable to think of some of the Cork mullockers who won an All Ireland in 2010 and Coulter never even got an Ulster.

Haven’t a clue. about seven I’d say.

The same Eoin Murphy you highlighted after the Fitzgibbon final where he played centre back for WIT.
He is a cousin of Richie Power too.

Eoin Murphy has hardly been that impressive in his championship appearances to date. Away to Offaly in 2013 was pretty poor and he’s coughed up a few goals from uncertainty under the high ball.

Is that on the fathers or mothers side?

A cracking player.

Always sad to see such players depart.

i posted that late of a Friday evening, you can ignore my late Friday evening posts - see craft beer thread

Aren’t most of them?

I don’t think so, Down had a very talented core of players, they won All Ireland minor titles in 99 and 2005 and the side which reached the All Ireland final in 2010 were backboned by these two sides. They were good enough to have at least won one Ulster title but it never happened, they probably lacked a bit in depth and physicality to ultimately win an All Ireland but apart from 2010 their performances were well below par. They also weren’t helped by the injury travails to the likes of key players like Doyle and Gordon and also the loss of Marty Clarke. Coulter has retired without a single inter county medal to his name and only the one all star, he was one of the best forwards around over the last 10-15 years.

What you’re saying is that they weren’t good enough. Many counties have a sob sorry like that.
