Godfather of the Irish Army. A true patriot. He sorted out the irregulars fair sharpish
Should the title not read Dev?
A rat most certainly but not a coward.
I attended the same school as General Mulcahy, though this was a detail the brothers were somewhat remiss in pointing this out to us. In fact I only only discovered this fact two years ago.
A despicable character.
whatever else he was he definitley was not a coward…
A relation of his was PP in Kilmallock.
Was he also a coward rat traitor?
No idea mate. Before my time.
He was a bit of a cunt alright.
I came across a set of facts relating to General Mulcahy that would have rocked the State to its very core if I had uncovered them fifty years ago.
General Mulcahy’s more famous children, fashion designer Neillà Mulcahy and physician and Late Late Show habituè Risteard Mulcahy made much of their idyllic childhood in Lissonfield House Rathmines. Lissonfield was a grand big old house set on a couple of acres in Rathmines near Portobello bridge. It had been the residence of the Chief of staff of the British Army in Ireland and thus fell into State ownership upon independence.
As it was adjacent to Portobello barracks the Mulcahy family were moved in there as a protective measure after Collins was shot. For a time it was cast as the official residence of the Minister for Defence but when Mulcahy moved to the education portfolio he continued to live there. In fact he continued to live there until his death in 1971.
In the meantime he acquired the property for the princely sum of £4,000 in 1964 with money provided by his son, Risteard. On the General’s death Risteard took over the house and sold it in 1988 to a developer for over 100 times what he paid the State for it. It is now an apartment development.
His brother was PP in Kilmallock in the 50’s/60’s. Dean Mulcahy.
Any connection to 2018 All-Star Graeme?
Grandfather.
So proud you told us twice, blueshirt.
Square-head blueshirt … there’s a cartoon in that.
We saved Oireland mate.
Was expecting that question…certainly not. But Graeme’s grandfather Patsy Quilty did win an All Ireland Junior medal in the 30’s.
Time flies doesn’t it?
