God, the costs under this Government are completely out of hand. Madrid is building 7km of underground metro with five stations for about €744 million, while our 18.8km MetroLink could cost €19 billion and people are even talking about €30 billion.
The Spanish would probably deliver the whole thing for €3–€5 billion, and China for less again.
We’ve somehow normalised paying several times the international price for every major project.

The scale of this is absolutely obscene. For the €19–€30 billion being talked about for less than 19km of MetroLink, we could restore the Galway–Tuam–Claremorris–Sligo railway, build a new line from Sligo into Donegal, and construct an entirely new north western route branching from Portadown through Armagh, Monaghan and Omagh to Letterkenny, giving Donegal proper rail connections to both Dublin and Belfast. Even at a very generous €30–€40 million per kilometre, we could build hundreds of kilometres of regional railway for less than this one short Dublin line.
Madrid builds underground metro for about €106 million per kilometre; we’re heading towards €1 billion per kilometre. This isn’t normal inflation, it’s a State that has completely lost control of infrastructure costs.

The price of it is obscene. I’ve already pointed out that, for less than the cost of this short Metrolink, you could build rail connections from Portadown to Letterkenny and from Galway through Sligo to Letterkenny benefiting most of Connacht, the northwest and Donegal.
You may disagree, and that’s fair enough, but I see very little value in spending up to €19 billion on less than 19km of railway when an overground Luas or improved connection could do much of the job.
I use the airport bus regularly and rarely experience any serious delay.
The alternative I’ve outlined would transform an entire region and deliver vastly more bang for the taxpayer’s buck.
In my opinion, spending that kind of money for such limited gain is obscene
