Sid, can we have an update on the situation in Africa please. I note Ghana have lodged an objection of some sort against the ref who took charge of their 0-0 draw with Uganda yesterday.

I haven’t looked into the Ghana situation but they’re likely fucked anyway - Egypt will almost certainly qualify from that group.

There is precedent here with dodgy referees - South Africa’s win over Senegal was annulled and that match will have to be replayed next month.

The five African qualifiers look likely to be:
Nigeria (they qualified yesterday)
Egypt
Tunisia
Morocco or Ivory Coast (Ivory Coast v Morocco is the final match in that group - Ivory Coast meed to win, Morocco need a draw)
Senegal (they have two matches against South Africa left, a draw in one of them should do, South Africa need to win both to qualify)

Costa Rica qualified last night with a last gasp equaliser against Honduras.

They haven’t really, well they did them a favour by not losing, but going and actually winning was not a favour.

Paraguay have now shot back into contention for qualifying themselves and they have Venezuela at home in their final match.

Peru play Colombia who will be reeling after that.

Chile go to Brazil and Argentina really need Brazil to go and win that.

Argentina are outside the qualifying places now in 6th, but Paraguay’s win means Argentina beating Ecuador will guarantee them a play-off place at least. But the game is at altitude which makes it very difficult.

But that would have been the case anyway had Paraguay held on for the draw in Colombia. Had Paraguay only drawn, they couldn’t have over taken Argentina.

If Argentina only draw against Ecuador, Paraguay will go ahead of them by beating Venezuela, and it would mean that a draw in either the Brazil-Chile or Peru-Colombia matches, or a one goal win for Peru, would put Argentina out.

Argentina are right on the edge now.

Uruguay have effectively qualified after those results.
