German police have confirmed that Hannover and Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke has died.

The 32-year-old is reported to have died close to his home close to Hannover near a railway level crossing.

According to police reports, Enke was struck by a train close to his home in Neustadt-Eilvese and died at the scene.

The early indications suggest he may have committed suicide.

Enke was omitted from the Germany squad for their upcoming friendly matches against Chile, on Saturday, and the Ivory Coast next Wednesday despite having recovered from a virus which had kept him out of action for almost two months.

His national team colleagues learned the tragic news after training in Bonn today.

‘We are all shocked,’ said Germany’s general manager Oliver Bierhoff.

‘We are lost for words.’

The president of the German Football Association (DFB) Dr Theo Zwanziger added that he and the rest of the football community in Germany ‘are deeply distressed and in mourning’.

‘All our sympathy goes to the wife of Robert Enke and his family,’ he added on the DFB’s website.

Enke’s daughter Lara died in 2006 of a rare heart condition when she was just two. He leaves behind his wife, Teresa, and an eight-month-old daughter the coupled had adopted

Shocked to read this, remember him signing for Barcelona earlier in the decade, think he could well have been linked with Celtic as well at one stage

fuckin hell thats horrible, the wife losing a child & a husband so soon to each other-

November is the big danger month for topping yourself.

According to Sky Sports News and BBC Sport, its suicide. awful news

Shocked to hear that. Smashing player, looked a certainty to be Germany’s goalkeeper at the world cup. Sort of implies in the initial story above that he was dropped from the national team but he had been injured/sick and only played 1 game the other day when he came back so there was no way he was getting selected for a friendly.

Anyway that’s not the point really I suppose - just pointing out he didn’t kill himself because he wasn’t picked for Germany. Quite the opposite really, his football was going well.

RIP.

Police find Enke suicide note

Police have found a suicide note written by German national goalkeeper Robert Enke, who died on Tuesday after being hit by an express train near Hanover.

‘I can confirm that there is a farewell letter but out of respect to the family we will not say anything more,’ Lower Saxony police spokesman Stefan Wittke told reporters.

The 32-year-old Enke was hit by the train travelling at 160 kph as it passed through a crossing near Hanover on its route between Hamburg and Bremen.

Police said the Hanover 96 captain’s car, parked metres away from the tracks, was unlocked and his wallet was still inside.

The German soccer federation called off training for Saturday’s international friendly against Chile, putting the match in doubt.

‘The training planned for this morning has been cancelled, as have all interview appointments,’ the national body said. ‘More information will be available later in the day.’

Enke won eight international caps and was in the running to play at the World Cup in South Africa next year.

After years of battling injuries and personal issues, including the death of his two-year-old daughter due to a heart ailment in 2006, Enke finally appeared poised to grab the number one spot for the national side.

He lived in the shadow of Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann for almost a decade and it was only after the latter’s international retirement last year that Enke emerged as a leading contender for the position, despite earning his first call-up in 1999.

He won his first cap in 2007.

After playing for Borussia Moenchengladbach, Enke had several stints abroad, including at Benfica, Barcelona and Tenerife before returning to the Bundesliga in 2004.

Barcelona held a minute’s silence before dedicating their King’s Cup victory over Cultural Leonesa to Enke on Tuesday, while Tenerife said their players would be wearing black armbands in their La Liga match at the weekend.

Hundreds of fans gathered outside the Hanover stadium and offices on Wednesday, leaving flowers and lighting candles in Enke’s memory.

Enke is survived by his wife Teresa and an eight-month-old girl the couple adopted in May.

The German soccer league (DFL) said a minute’s silence would be held on the next matchday, with all players wearing black armbands.

That threw me I must say.

Ooops, yea, sorry about that.

Germany have called off their friendly with Chile in Cologne on Saturday following the death of goalkeeper Robert Enke.

Enke, who had been suffering from depression, was struck by a regional train travelling between Norddeich and Hanover at a railway crossing in Neustadt am Rubenberge yesterday evening and died at the scene.

The 32-year-old Hannover keeper had only recently recovered a mysterious bacterial infection and had been omitted from the squad for their upcoming friendlies against Chile and the Ivory Coast next Wednesday.

The German FA confirmed the news on their official website, www.dfb.de.

Left a note for what was left of his family and left his wife and an adopted child… cunt

To be honest when you see it and realised what else has gone on even in this country in the last few days you wonder about these cunts setting up facebook groups and ringing Joe Duffy.

Eboue never struck me as an alright sort, but that is a magnificent gesture.
