From the Sunday Indo, is it true? Have thought it would be ideal from a Rovers point of view for years, location and size wise anyway. But if they had trouble wit hthe locals in Tallaght how are this crowd going to like it ?
Hoops on the move
Sunday November 11 2007
Shamrock Rovers played their last game at Tolka Park last Friday night, and are looking forward to a move closer to their old Milltown home next season.
The Hoops, who are awaiting the verdict of a judicial review on their Tallaght stadium, have secured the Leinster Branch RFU ground at Donnybrook for their 2008 programme. A compact ground, which is no longer big enough for Leinsterâs rugby team, it will have ample capacity for Rovers.
The move brings Rovers closer to their origins, as they were founded in Ringsend, and it should please their fans, who have never been happy at the Drumcondra venue.
âFor whatever reason, our fans donât seem to have taken to Tolka Park,â said manager Pat Scully after the 0-0 draw with Waterford United last Friday night.
âFor the first game in the First Division last season against Dundalk we had three and a half thousand, with one thousand from Dundalk, yet nine weeks ago against Longford when we were second in the table we only had 800,â he added.
Rovers expect the verdict from the judicial review early next month, and if it is favourable they hope to be playing in Tallaght in 2009.
Meanwhile, Shelbourneâs hopes of a move to Home Farmâs Whitehall stadium next season were knocked on the head when the Farm committee voted 17-12 to reject the Reds, who now expect the 2008 season to be their last in Tolka Park, according to chief executive Andy Byrne.
