Roy Keane - Sky Sports Pundit / Walkers Leprechaun / Adidas Champion

I wholeheartedly agree. I’ve also never walked out on my country

Whatever about Vieira, how many times did Keane play against El Principe de Madrid?? Redondo ran amok in an open game at OT where he showboated past keane and a defender to set up a goal… But apart from that how regularlly did their paths cross?

that’s the crux of it.

Keane could do things right and correct a 1000 times, no credit.

One fella beats him. He is shit, couldn’t lace a car salesman’s boots

The true greats are always held to different standards

Keane was a semi decent player but not a true leader. A true leader puts their team first at all times. Keane couldn’t do this and regularly made things about himself.

he was so good as a player, people are still talking about him as a person and a manager, 15 years on from his career finishing and many years after he was a busted flush as a manager.
If he was a functional/average midfielder he would have faded into obscurity by now.

I don’t know the guy, personally. He is very peculiar on the TV though. Almost like one of the WUM’s on here.

I don’t necessarily think that Keane was a technically gifted player - in fact, he wasn’t. But he could do the basics very well, he could get on the ball and pass it simply, he had decent control and had a good football brain in terms of calming the game down or injecting pace. He was also a very good tackler.

But probably his best trait was the drive he had inside him, to go the extra yard, to give it his all, to leave everything on the pitch. That is something that not every player possesses, especially technically gifted ones.

Now there were probably many of those types of players out there down the years, but as an Irish man I saw it first hand in numerous matches. The following I can recall off the top of my head where Keane excelled (we may not have always got the result):

  • Spain away (WCQ 1993)
  • Italy in New York (WC 1994)
  • Romania away (WCQ 1998)
  • Yugoslavia away (ECQ 2000)
  • Cyprus away (WCQ 2001)
  • Portugal home (WCQ 2001) - possibly the best performance I have ever seen by anyone in a green shirt.
  • Holland home (WCQ 2001)

he was assistant coach of ireland up til 9 months ago and thats why hes still being talked about, not because he was a good footballer fifteen years ago

yeah because people always talk about assistant managers

That’s less than Matt Holland.

He’s still being talked about because he’s in the media talking shite so much

Bord Gais Theatre sold out to view a chat with him!!

that’s a big contradiction right there. You’ve said he’s not technically gifted, but gone on to list technical aspects of the game that he excelled at.

He wasn’t very skillful, but he was extremely technical.

Fair enough.
