What a striker he was.

Just had a look at his international record.

And I’m amazed at how poor his scoring record is, just 6 goals in 43 appearances and someone like Van Persie who I think Makaay was a much more developed striker than and a level above had 50 in 102 appearances.

Probably explained by the fact that Makaay came through at a time when the Dutch had the likes of Kluivert (40 goals in 79), Van Nistelrooy (35 in 70), Van Hooijdonk (14 in 46) and Bergkamp (37 in 79) so most of his game time came off the bench.

I’ll never forget the night he broke Celtic hearts under MON (with the help of Hedman).
