The Rugby Thread (Part 1)

I done a bit of looking into this - an estimated wage bill of €10m for Saracens probably wouldn’t be too far off the mark. Leinsters top 8 Irish earners take home about €4m according to an article I read yesterday. If we say their next 10 take home another €2.5m, that leaves €3m for the remaining 30+ squad members to make it a €10m wage bill. It’s all speculation really but I’d say them figures are not out by too far.

Who is in the 10 earning 250 a year? Below top 8 earners (assume sexton, furlong, mcgrath, healy, henshaw, SOB, kearney, toner, heaslip and sincerely doubt all on 500k) you are down to likes of cronin ruddock vdf and leavy mcgrath etc. I might be completely wrong but unless wage structure has balooned in 18 months them lads are not on 250k a year.

There is an often quoted 10 m wage bill for provinces thst is assigned to ‘squad costs’ which my understanding is covers coaching and medical staff also.

The Munster wage bill is by and large the same. Just adjust for no of players on central contracts

The salary cap in the aviva is 9m stg so thats the bare minimum if you believe they adhere to the cap. Wasps wage bill in 2016 2017 was something like 17m but they would be the biggest spenders in that league

I was thinking lads like Jack McGrath, Cronin, VDF, Ringrose, Dave Kearney but also Lowe, Fardy and maybe Nacewa. Lowe came to Ireland for a life changing salary, I’d be surprised if he is on less than €350k. If Ulsters wage bill really is the same as Leinsters then there are lads stealing a living up there.
The Aviva salary cap is 7m + 2 extra players and a 800k allowance for developing youngsters. Saracens will be using all of it and maybe a bit more. The sterling weakening drastically in the last 2 years has probably made a big difference when comparing budgets.

Your numbers are miles off here.

Ringrose could be on 50k, Cronin and vdf max a 100k.

Ringrose renewed recently for about 200k a year.

Cronin and VDF probably 20-30% below that level.

Players are paid ok here. Far more than welsh and scots clubs by and large

But a huge swathe of the squad on sub 100k alright. Likes of o loughlin, frawley, adam byrne etc are all squad players and readily interchangable with others. They would get more in france or England but get enough game time and sniff of the big time to stay here for less. For now.

That’s def Ringroses first 6 figure contact. Cronin is on small enough money.

It probably is for ringrose yeah. Only renewed in last few months. Cronin is paid ok. He renewed again v recently (as in since turn of year) and hed pick up great wedge elsewhere. They played hardball enough with him if you recall he wasnt included in nov int squad for some of the games while he was negotiating

Cronin can’t leave Dublin his hands are tied.

It’s all speculation really but I’d be surprised. The article I read has O’Brien on 550k, Toner and Best on 400k. If a hooker with 61 caps is really on 100k then he needs a new agent. If Ulster really are spending similar to Leinster then there are far worse players up there who have achieved far less than Cronin on far more money than him.

Why, with family?

Again for the Ulster figure you would need to adjust for number of central contracts to come to a valid comparison with Leinster. But once that is done they are by and large in same ball park. You are right in that loads of lads stealing a living up there. But remember they have charles piatau who probably paid not far off sexton and marcel coetzee another huge wage bill. Also have jackson and olding prob 300k ++ of wages not available to play. And a rubbish throughput from academy so far more of regular playing squad are blow ins than at leinster

I’d say Sean o brien is closer to 350k. Cronin has always been a sub. Has he started more than 20 games?

O’Brien on a good bit less that Stander? I know you shouldn’t believe everything you read but Sportsjoe have a conservative estimate of 200k for Ringrose. I think salaries are rising faster than you realise.

We are the Chosen People.

I wouldn’t read sports joe.

You should, you would have known Ringrose signed a new contract😃

Scarlets looked like one trick ponies against munster 2 weeks ago. The top teams will have worked them out. Leinster by 15.

They rested half the first team for that match.
