Jordan Peterson (cc @anon61956325 ) has this covered. We lie because of a gap between who we are and how we act. Irish people because of size of country maybe are not comfortable in their own skins - don’t want to offend or embarrass people. In some ways it is a great trait and explains why we are usually liked - we generally have decent empathy and don’t like awkward social situations so will gloss over any disagreement using micro-lies. Explains drinking culture too. Could also explain the depression explosion as people struggle with their world facing face and their internal monologue
