France won. France have eliminated Ireland in the quarter finals of the World Cup in 1995 & 2003 and effectively in 2007 as well by winning pool stage match.

Ireland beat Argentina in a 2003 pool match. which was an eliminator. Both Ireland and France had already advanced to quarter finals when they met in final pool match in 2015. It was an odd comment from @Halfpipe.

Defeat to Argentina in 1999, 2007 and 2015 have each confirmed Irelands exit from the World cup, no other country has had such a devastating effect on the nations efforts to reach the promised land of a world cup semi-final. Only once in the professional era has defeat to France resulted in Irelands elimination. There will be Irishmen, South Africans and New Zealanders jumping for joy with that result in a hotel somewhere near Tokyo.

Yes Ireland beat Argentina in the pool stage eliminator in the 2003 World Cup and were then soundly beaten by France in the quarter final.
The earliest Ireland could have faced Argentina in this World Cup is the semi final. That would have to involve Ireland beating South Africa or New Zealand in a quarter final and Argentina beating Wales or Australia in a quarter final.
