It’s time we all get behind the lads. I’m on record as being anti-rugby supporter shite but it’s churlish to cheer against any Irish team that could win a world tournament.

We’ll never win a World Cup in any of our lifetimes. Winning a Rugby World Cup would be great for our island. There’s the bonus of all the former rugby players we’ve grown to hate being sickened to the core that they aren’t on the team to do it.

The soccer is v easy to follow for everyone with only the few basic skills involved and everyone reckons they could be good enough with a bit of training. The reverse snobbery is a factor as well

In fairness there’s a much larger playing pool worldwide and nationally for soccer so it’s much more difficult to make it as a professional. By comparison most medium sized towns would have a decent rugby player who’d be on regional teams and therefore not a million miles off international underage standard. If you make it at Leinster these days you’re basically in the reckoning to play top tier international rugby.

Not to piss on the rubby boys chips but rubby fails to capture the imagination like the ROI team too the odd time they are in a big tournament. Pubs thronged at 7 in the morning in 2002, housing estates covered with flags and bunting, the turnouts to welcome the team home in 1990 and 1994 etc. You just don’t get that buy in for rubby.

There seems to be a perception that if we don’t win it now we’ll never win a World Cup. I couldn’t disagree more. Our underage results and player pathway would suggest that we’ll still have a strong team in 2027 and will surely have an easier draw.
