Sir, – Matt Williams is the latest to tell us that rugby trumps soccer when it comes to teaching our young people about life values (“If sport is entertainment, rugby was far ahead of soccer last weekend,” Sports, July 10th).
A familiar trope. Would it not be enough to celebrate a good weekend for rugby without claiming this moral superiority?
It is a rather tiresome assertion and is one that just highlights the prejudice and elitism of those who make it. – Yours, etc,
I’ve had a liking for him since I heard him appear with Oisín McConville on a Second Captains podcast in 2021 about a hypothetical United Ireland and the hypothetical road to it.
Just listening to POM there. Doesn’t want the day to day of working his way up in club rugby. Wants to blag a job in the Ireland set up like Sexton and POC.
Paulie jacked in club coaching in France because it was 6 days a week with only Wednesday or Thursday off, and putting together video analysis took ages.
We’ve learned our lesson and only predicted that we’d narrowly beat the Argies this time. All just a matter of hitting our straps and pulling up trees in the coming 14 months.
