Especially in Galway.
Borat making an appearance at 40 secs in approx.
Padraig McGann the carriage driver and publican hosting the wedding reception. Some man to go, big rugby man and a big driver behind Monivea rugby club.
The groom if I am not mistaken began a very good joinery business.
Interestingly, there is no Catholic church in Monivea at all and I don’t recognise the church in the footage. Monivea was a Protestant village and is the Catholic sister parish of Abbeyknockmoy.
There is a great yarn about two lads cycling to Athenry one Sunday back in the day to watch a County Final. (I think I shared this before) Their mother warned them to be sure get mass on the way. The boys hit for Athenry but mass was forgotten and instead they hit the hostelries of Athenry. They eventually made their way home after the game and a gut full of porter. Monday morning at breakfast there wasn’t much chat with 2 sore heads and the mother asked ‘Did ye get mass lads?’
‘We did Ma’
‘And where did ye get it?’
‘Monivea Ma’…
Newcastle church that is. The curse of St Patrick was that Monivea would never be any different from the day he went through it and had his goats milk stolen - it’s a curse that has been rigidly adhered to.
