Kennedy pulled nuclear weapons out of Turkey, which were installed in 1959. Europe needs to figure out a defensive strategy that doesn’t involve a US led military presence on Russia’s borders.
There is currently none. There is no such thing. The west as we understand it - that is, a Europe which in which our basic freedoms are guaranteed - is backstopped by US hard power.
That will not change in the short term, if indeed it ever changes. The most likely thing that will change it in the medium term is a return to rule by the Putinist far right in the US in 2024.
I’d applaud that man not tweeting that and ask that everyone here avoids posting tweets, photos etc of casualties.

But did Nato even want to go in? Never mind fear of escalation etc, could they even just be that bothered?
But here’s the problem - people need to understand what is at stake and what the reality of this is.
When that evil monster videoed himself shooting all those people in the mosque in Christchurch, I watched it once, to comprehend the evil that believing evil beliefs can do.

There are NATO forces in Estonia and Latvia, and discussion of increasing their strength. Ukraine has requested since 2008 to join NATO, as has Georgia. Zelensky recently talked about a nuclear Ukraine. Finland joining NATO has also been proposed.
You can continue to dismiss these as not relevant to the current conflict, but it’s head in the sand stuff.

Of course there are NATO forces in Estonia and Latvia. They are NATO countries. NATO exists to stop countries being invaded. This is as relevant as saying that there are Russian forces in Novosibirsk.
There has been so much talk about Ukraine and Russia for the last eight years and the vast majority of it has been so much bullshit.
All of the people who talked that bullshit talk would have understood what was going on a hell of a lot better if they had got the following three words through their thick skulls - “Putin is Hitler.”

Wars are prevented by deterrence. NATO is deterrence. NATO countries do not get invaded. Non-NATO countries do. 200k NATO troops is deterrence.
