“Trust Hitler, regime change in Germany would be a disaster”

Lads thinking they’re ballsy because they knew covid wouldn’t lay a glove on them now think it’s alright for Ukraine to be wasted as long as comrade Putin doesn’t push the button and send a mushroom cloud every which way … I’m alright Jack

Muscular cowardice

A runaway trolley is heading down the tracks toward five workers who will all be killed if the trolley proceeds on its present course. Adam is standing next to a large switch that can divert the trolley onto a different track. The only way to save the lives of the five workers is to divert the trolley onto another track that only has one worker on it. If Adam diverts the trolley onto the other track, this one worker will die, but the other five workers will be saved.

If you are Adam what do you do ?

A runaway trolley is heading down the tracks toward five workers who will all be killed if the trolley proceeds on its present course. Adam is on a footbridge over the tracks, in between the approaching trolley and the five workers. Next to him on this footbridge is a stranger who happens to be very large. The only way to save the lives of the five workers is to push this stranger off the footbridge and onto the tracks below where his large body will stop the trolley. The stranger will die if Adam does this, but the five workers will be saved.

If you are Adam what do you do ?

Is your answer same in each scenario.

We can’t afford to have deontologists determine the course of action where a nuclear war is at stake. Utilitarianism is what’s needed. May not like it but it’s why you were born and the world didn’t end 60 years ago.

You’re ok Jack.

Back to making up things that people said again? You’re consistent if nothing else.

In a nuclear war you’ll have to clean the radioactive fallout off the birthday cards.

Oooh matron the bully will beat me up if I get involved.

I’ll be in a queue to do it.

What are you talking about? No-one wants to see anyone slaughtered. At best its a ridiculous thing to say. You’re far better than that.

Would you think the Swedish PM is in a better or worse position than yourself in terms of deciding what is right for Sweden at this moment?

How dare you.

Sorry mate. It was just a weird thought that struck me. Wont happen again…

So do you wait until all Ukranians are slaughteted before going in? Do you have a figure of acceptable fatalities before deciding to go in and how did you reach that figure. I wouldn’t agree but I would understand the Putin appeasement if there was some evidence that he would stop if his demands were met. The west’s response is atrocious and is only encouraging Putin. It’s his lack of resources and planning that are holding him back.

Yer oul head. What are putins demands…his realistic demands? That Ukraine doesn’t join nato? Ukraine shouldn’t have been anywhere near nato…ironically this war is it’s only realistic chance of getting in. Or that he gets control of the sepratist regions? He’s not that pushed, never was. The west’s response? The best time to respond would have been before russia invaded, but the public was busy rain dancing and changing the signage on the toilet doors -while concerns and warnings about nato expansion were ignored.

You seem to equate ‘deciding to go in’ with stopping the slaughter . Youve also bought the propaganda that putin is a mad man with his eye on securing his legacy and through expansionism… Have you considered that going in might prolong or increase the slaughter? Bit of an oversight if you haven’t. The wests response is pretty remarkable, and it will probably bring putin to the table. Dont be expecting there to be any winners btw. That’s not how it works.

I know exactly what you are saying and you know exactly what you are saying.

But you are too gutless to admit what it is you are saying, which is why you have had to spend this entire thread writing in the same Smirkish that Ewan MacKenna writes in.

You really do think Putin is an honest broker. You’ve thought it all along.

Not only have you learned nothing, it’s worse you’re getting.

They are in a better position, quite obviously.

And yet in that better position, they have come to a demonstrably erroneous conclusion.

They have chosen a stance that is both worse for their own country and worse for the international community.

Just like Chamberlain did.

Was Chamberlain in a better position than you to know what was best for Britain and the international community?

Did he make the right decision?

Answer the question, now.

Perhaps our very own Chamberlain, @glasagusban, might have a go at answering that one too.

You’re comparing this to the beginning of world war 2. Hitler had no nukes. Putin does. That changes things. The variables are very much different. So i would say the Swedish PM is quite possibly right in not stirring shit. Id imagine there is a whole load of back channeling going on and people are very wary of further stoking the fires while at the same time trying to stop Russia.
Id say that your assertion he is definitely wrong is horseshit.
