Ryder Cup 2012

Both noble suggestions Sidney. By God its an amazing week to be a European/American all the same. Nothing stirs the pride quite like seeing the graphic of those flags draping that famous trophy. Theres nothing like a Ryder Cup. Who will be doing the jaegerbombs from it this year? God almighty only knows.

I hope Tom Lehman will be there this year. He might be able to tell us.
MBB, what’s your favourite ever Ryder Cup fourball/foursome pairing?

Some great ones to choose from over the years.
Wow. Just wow Sidney, thats a hell of a question. On the spot, I’m gonna go with Seve/Olly. They were just a joy to watch. Monty with just about anyone of course deserves a mention, such a generous golfer, proof that the Ryder Cup is a better judge of a golfer, nay, a Man, than any Major.

Westwood & Clarke, Segio & Donald to name 2 more.

For the US I suppose it was Love/Couples back in the day

I think on balance I’d go with the iconic Seve/Olly pairing too.

But plenty of other great ones there too. With the absence of Olly due to arthritis in his foot in 1995, Bernard Gallacher’s decison to team up Seve with David Gilford was an unlikely success. You would never have thought the chemistry between the flamboyant Spaniard and the quiet Englishman would have worked, but how it did. Gallacher saw something that nobody else did. That’s why he was captain.

Garcia and Parnevik in 1999 was key to Europe’s 10-6 lead going into the final day. The two of them literally bounced off each other.

This bollox about “flamboyancy” in golf. “Edgy” in golf is some guy spiking his hair or wearing an odd sweater. Ian Poulter is considered “out there” and “edgy” because he wears loud clothes, whereas in reality he is no more edgy than Ray D’Arcy. Padraig Harrington was “cool” when he had highlights in his hair.

The “excitement” and the “electric atmosphere” coming down the 18th, is no more than a bunch of people clapping at the same time. FFS!!! I like golf. It is what it is, but Sky trying to “big” it up into some exciting sport is bollox…

Then they have a parade of wives and girlfriends!!! FFS!!!

This was to be done away with but was retained following a players objection. Its tremendous pomp and unique to the Ryder Cup God bless it.

ah fu*k off with your pomp!

Do the burds go out and hit bunker shots with them? No, they just keep sucking their tom dooleys because they know they will get to spend the credit card on the weekends…

Will GMac and Rors be paired together? Any early speculation as to our likely pairs?

Having seen Elin when we were blessed enough to have this famous tournament visit our shores, I can assure you they live every single shot with their gentleman partners.

GMac and McIlcunt have played both practice days as a twosome so its highly unlikely they will be separated much over the course of the weekend.

Philistine.

What about GMac, McIlcunt and Elin in a threesome?

Bullshit. I told you it is the senior ladies golf society.

Bando:

I’m on a few weeks holiday in the US of A and visiting Chicago and taking in the Ryder Cup fitted in nicely together.

The merchandise tent is fucking ridiculous. About the size of St Stephen’s Green shopping center and the cash rich yanks just can’t buy enough in there. I didn’t price the sweaters myself but a windbreaker pullover jobby is $75.

Fagan: atmosphere is building nicely across the great sports city of Chicago. There is blue, red and white everywhere and America wants that cup.

After 2 days of overseeing practice, I have not bothered with today or the opening ceremony. The hangover this morning didn’t help either. Instead, I intend to get out there early tomorrow and to be at that first tee.

There have been some right cunts from UK and Ireland over here. Yesterday I saw a group of about 10 guys in full Union Jack suits walking around and acting like right idiots in a few of the bars. Then I spotted 3 lads wearing Irish rugby tops with Rory 1 on the back and wearing McIlroy wigs. The few times I’ve spotted them they were acting like your typical group of rugby football jocks. Basically being loud and looking for attention as much as possible.

In fairness, the majority of the Americans I have chatted to around the course have been sound. Chicago folk in general are very much alright sorts.

Some Americans are funny though. Half the time they are not paying attention to what is happening on the course at all and it is more about hanging out with their buddies or family drinking ice cold beers/eating hot-dogs. I suppose it is a big part of their culture in terms of attending sports events.

Don’t follow the golf at all and have never and will never play the game but they will be all talking about it at work and they think it is good so might try to follow this one. Someone told me Tiger is a great e/w bet at 5/1 for top American as he cannot see him outside of their first three. Any of the experts care to comment?

Tiger has a poor enough record at this dunph even when he couldn’t be bet in strokeplay he struggled badly in team competition, doesn’t tend to blend with partners, I would steer clear myself even though 5 /1 sounds big

Value your opinion as always, mate.

“I get a chance to represent my country like the Military represent us. They go all over the world fighting for freedom - our freedom to play golf. I hope to hit a few shots for them all. God bless America.”
