It looks almost certain that the legendary Tom Watson is to return as captain of Team USA, 21 years after he led them to victory at The Belfry.
Is Darren Clarke getting the European gig? I was hoping Paul McGinley would get it.
Tom Watson vs the brain & brawn of Paul McGinley or Darren Clarke :strokechin:
WE ARE GOING DOWN, WE ARE GOING DOWN!
Incredible scenes.
Monty is the Ryder Cup. We won’t be beaten with a Ryder Cup legend like him captaining us
Fuck Mrs Doubtfire, McGinley all the way. The most popular guy on the tour, the players will die for him out there. Monty has some allies on the selection team but Watson’s appointment should change nothing, McGinley has served his time as vice captain and is ready to lead. Monty being parachuted in would only serve to add rancour to the camp at this stage.
I’m going to cut myself if McGinley doesn’t get the captaincy honour.
I suggest all of you do likewise.
#cut4paul
Couldnt we just ask that all Irish people pull out of this event unless Paul gets it? Could they go ahead with it without us?
Failing that, I like the cutting notion.
POD isn’t going to make the team so I doubt it’d be a factor.

Is Rory English again?
This is getting as dirty as a Celeb Spotting Adjudication vote. Darren Clarke seems to be plotting against McGinley behind the scenes to get Montgomerie in place. Golf pricks, is there any history of bad blood between Clarke and McGinley?
I think McGinley once raked his spikes down Clarke’s calf when he was standing over an important putt.
Seemingly Clarke piped up when Watson appointed as USA captain, saying that Europe would need an experienced captain. :strokechin:
Poulter, Mcilroy and Donald have come out in support of McGinley at least.
Captain Biggles has stepped aside it seems.

Golf: Former British Open golf champion Darren Clarke has pulled out of the race to succeed Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal as Europe’s Ryder Cup captain. Clarke’s withdrawal leaves the way clear for a two-horse race between long-time favourite Paul McGinley and former skipper Colin Montgomerie who has come into the picture late in the day.

“I have been to see (Players Committee chairman) Thomas Bjorn and formally informed him I do not want to be considered for the Ryder Cup captaincy in 2014,” Clarke said this morning. “It was not a spur-of-the-moment decision. I have been agonising over what to do since I showed a few glimpses of my old form in Thailand and Australia at the end of last year.”

The Players Committee meet in Abu Dhabi at 3.30pm Irish time and are expected to announce the new Ryder Cup captain at around 6pm.

Clarke, the 2011 British Open champion, was also a front-runner for the job until his odds lengthened last week when he hinted he wanted another shot at playing in the team he served five times between 1997-2006. World number one Rory McIlroy re-iterated his support for McGinley to be given the job for the 2014 edition of the biennial team event at Gleneagles, Scotland.

Luke Donald and Ian Poulter have also rowed in behind the Dubliner.

“I have a very strong opinion about this,” said the 23-year-old Northern Irishman. “I really think Paul deserves it. He has been a great player and a great personality for the European Tour over the years. I also played under him at the Seve Trophy in 2009 and I thought he did a great job. From all the captains I’ve played under, I think he was the best.”

McIlroy seemed to be perturbed that several members of the 2012 Ryder Cup team were not on the Players Committee that decides the new skipper.

“Myself, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald and Justin Rose have all voiced their opinion that they want Paul,” he said. “I would like to think our opinions are valuable to them and they make the decision based on that. I’m not even sure there is anyone sitting on the Players Committee who is even going to make the Ryder Cup team.”
Fair play to McIlroy for saying that. McGinley deserves the captaincy. No doubt the British press will be trying to get that cunt mrs doubtfire the gig.
I hope Montgomerie is given the nod
Interesting to see McIlroy going against his fellow Briton to support the Irish candidate.
Disappointing to see golf fans take sides on this issue. We are all Europeans.
+1, he is the Ryder Cup, great player and captain
