A gallant effort by Stevie G in Italy but he came up agonisingly short of securing the last automatic Ryder Cup place and will now rely on a captainâs pick.
The safe selection would be the all English trio of Poulter, Donald and Westwood but Gallacher has been playing very well and Scotland doesnât currently have a player on the team.
While Donaldâs form this year is poor, he has a smashing record in team events. A 10-4-1 Ryder Cup and 7-1 Walker Cup record and heâs never played on a losing team in either. Thatâs 6-0 in team events and a 17-5-1 individual record. His driving accuracy also makes him an ideal foursomes player.
Iâd actually leave out that fat bastard Lee Westwood. What do you reckon, chaps?
I think heâs lost a lot of weight over the past year or so
Poults is a shoe in. Westwood has a bit of form. Gallagher has the Scottish element in his favour. Bandage has pointed out the reasons why Donald is so likely to get picked.
Stevie G deserves his spot and it would be the right decision by McGinley. Poulter is a cert, so it comes down to Donald or Westwood, both have shown reasonable form this year, personally Iâd go for Donald myself. I hope McGinley doesnât bow to the English media, sky sports propaganda and pick the 3 English lads.
Keegan Bradley is a cert after ripping it up with Mickelson last time out and Hunter Mahan will surely make it too after his victory last week. Mahan is a steely type whoâs good in team events although he did cry when McDowell defeated him in the decisive singles match in Wales in 2010. I remember watching that match in Schiphol Airport on the Monday after weekend rain delays as I was on international business. Any thoughts on the final pick? The chap who won last night whose name escapes me? Did fat Pat Reed made it in automatically?
I havenât a clue as to who the final pick for the US team will be as I donât watch much golf, but what I will say is that whoever is chosen, itâll be the right decision. Thatâs because theyâll have been chosen by the legendary Tom Watson.

Would agree that Bradley and Mahan are absolute certs. Have a feeling the five times Open Champion will select Brandt Snedeker as well. Pat Reed made it in automatically.
I see twice US Open champion, Andy North and former US Masters, US Open and USPGA champion , Raymond Floyd are Team USAâs vice captains. Thatâs some collection of serial major winners and greats of the game in the Team USA brains trust.
All Europe have is Des Smythâs Dunhill Cup win and Jim McGuinness and Mickey Harteâs five (maybe six by tee off time) All Ireland medals.
I may be wrong but I thought Snedeker was another injury victim. Iâm possibly confusing him with Stricker though. Is one or the other or both ruled out?
