If you want to listen to some decent people on the left you’re better off looking to the likes of Kevin Maguire and Polly Toynbee. Una is your typical Irish Times commentator writing thought pieces months after they were discussed elsewhere. Her most creative pieces are moaning about how boujee Dublin’s bar scene has become.
Think she was one for a couple of years? I know the IT pushed her onto the commentary pages early because of all her woke tweeting.
I look for insight, pal - “conservatism” has long since passed the stage where it can provide any of that because it has totally retreated into a bizarre echo chamber
The few actual conservatives like Peter Oborne who do provide good insight are utterly vilified by the right wing echo chamber
I welcome views contrary to my own, however I have yet to hear a pro-Trump “commentator” come up with any insight whatsoever because underpinning Trumpism is kleptocracy and naked bigotry, and no rational defence whatsoever can be made for that
There is a mortal intellectual crisis within “conservatism” which a recent New Statesman cover demonstrated beautifully
“Conservative” “pundits” of the non-Oborne type are universally terrible
Kendzior is superb and not only exposes the kleptocracy of “conservatism” in general but it is utterly scathing of many Democrats and so called liberal media outlets
Her work is framed very much by international context and historical knowledge and she has a very shrewd eye for what’s happening throughout the former Soviet Union
A voice that a lot of posters here would do very well to listen to rather than retreat into their safe reactionary right-wing spaces
Maguire is entertaining. Toynbee is a pain in the hole.
Has a bit more about her than Una. Her last article was on automation and the gig economy…delighted Una got around to reading about that trend a couple of years after everyone else.
With all due respect’s I never heard of the people you mention . I suspect 99% of the great oirish public haven’t either .
I have heard to Polly thingy never heard to Maguire . A lot of these people have a massive irrelevance to most folk .
