Second Captains
I’d love to see that too but not enough people would id say. Sky sports can do it as their aiming exclusively at people who are by definition big sports fans as they’ve paid for subscriptions. Ratings don’t matter as much to them.
Outside internet message boards most sports fans are casual. How often do you hear people bemoaning the fact that there’s any analysis at all on the likes of the Sunday game. ‘Just show the matches for fucks sake’.
Even the ones you point out like carragher and Neville who take themselves really seriously and do po-faced in-depth analysis doesn’t seem to be popular on TFK which definitely has a far bigger proportion of sports nerds than the general population
TFK Sports Channel?

@ChocolateMice can agree to commentate and then not show up

@caoimhaoin can report directly from the bushes at the Cork training ground

@carryharry and @HBV* can do the post watershed show

My suggestion was on the basis that it would be an addition to the live games and traditional Sunday night highlights show and advertised accordingly. So “just show the matches” shouldn’t apply unless you’re dealing with really thick neanderthals. Actually, you might have a point because that’s about 80% of the GAA watching population.

The reason people say just show the matches is because the analysis is so bad

Look at some of the hurling analysts. Brennan, Mulcahy, Mick Kavanagh, Cummins - inoffensive, dull, bland, non critical clichéd analysis. Shefflin will probably take bland to another level.

Loughnane and to a lesser extent Cyril would be the only hurling pundits I would go out of my way to listen to. Most of the rest of them are from the “it’s a 50-50 game, Michael” school of punditry.

80 per cent is a bit kind. I have literally never heard anyone analysing games the way it’s done on the internet. 95 per cent of GAA fans would tell them to ‘stop that aul shite talk’ and most are adamant tactics don’t exist. They’re wrong but that’s what you’re dealing with. Might as well stick shane curran into a tumble drier in a pair of brown Y fronts.

“Shure Brian Cody doesnt do tactics”
People seem to cream themselves over the hour before the Monday night 8pm kick off on Sky Sports when Neville and Carragher analyse the key moments from the weekend’s games. They stand up in front of a big screen and show clips, break down how goals were created, explain how different tactics were utilised etc. Plot out formations on screen and all that shite.

Cusack tried to do stuff of that nature on the Sunday night show in his first year on The Sunday Game (e.g. showing how Clare were using Podge Collins etc) but there wasn’t enough time to delve deeply into it as they had to show full highlights of all games.

I think a 1-hour show like this would be well received on a Monday night. Take it as a given that people know the results and have seen the full highlights show the night before and whatever live matches were broadcast.

Just have a proper analysis of key moments and pointing out tactics/strategy and how teams might adapt for upcoming games. There’d still be enough match excerpts to avoid it being too much of a round table discussion but I think there’s certainly an appetite for more in depth analysis than “Waterford were very hungry today, weren’t they Tomás?” type bland old shite.
This.

That would be great but instead we have that muck “off the head” or whatever it’s called chaired by your man with the 3 pubes of a comb over.

Agreed. I’ve said it before, I don’t see why the GAA don’t make a one hour weekly analysis show a condition of their deal for broadcasting rights for the games.

I understand sport well enough, I don’t need guys passing themselves off as geniuses because they are stating the obvious on a frame-by-frame basis. The RTE football punditry is great, it doesn’t take it self all seriously. The British and Irish public are obviously clueless when it comes to football if it needs Carragher and Neville to explain the basics of football to them.

Pundits should just comment on the match and comment on the players. If you just watched a match you shouldn’t need it tactically dissected for you.

Good for you, pal.

Do you watch with the commentary turned off on live matches too?

No. If you read my post it should have been fairly obvious to you. I don’t mind people passing comment and having a discussion on things or a running commentary on who has the ball but I don’t need some clown like Neville or Carragher trying to make out they have a special mind for the understanding of a game because they freeze down an innocuous instance in a game into frames or slow mo and state the bloody obvious. I don’t need a pretty obvious explanation of a common incident milked out for over 20 minutes, play the clip in normal time, comment on what went wrong and move along. I understand sport, I got it the first time.

If lads enjoy this kind of in-depth analysis then they have probably never even played the game or have a complete lack of knowledge of how it works.

The thing I like about the RTE panel is they don’t bother wasting their time analysing but they debate and voice their opinions, wouldn’t agree with what is been said a lot but it’s entertaining. Sky’s football coverage is terrible, I don’t know how anyone can sit through it, remedial football classes for EPL bartstoolers.

RTE’s coverage is awful. Opinions plucked from mid air sometime in 1973

It’s entertaining. I understand sport, if you like the idea of being patronised and treated like a retard then fair enough. I’d much rather watch a bunch of lads having a heated argument over their outdated views.

I get enough of that on here.

But you do enjoy being patronised and treated like a retard?

No. Hence, I don’t watch RTE football analysis preferring a more forensic and fact based approach from Neville and Carragher.
