When Off The Ball started it was Gilroy and Early with a guy called Eamon Carey. It was two hours at the start and went up to three after about a year I’d guess. The first time they experimented with a three hour show was the night of Saipan.

The show featured plenty of Declan Drake going mental on association football commentary and Will Downing commentating on Leinster rugby and Dublin GAA.

McDevitt and Murphy were phased in from about 2004/05 around the time Carey left. From the start McDevitt played the genial Jack The Lad Dubs supporter pissed after Coppers the night before character. Murphy played the lippy country bumpkin pissed after Coppers the night before character. Where McDevitt struck gold was how he initially portrayed himself as a bit thick when he so clearly wasn’t. That built up a connection to the type of listener they were aiming at.

Gilroy’s problem was always that he fell on the wrong side of the smugness line and always came across as if he wanted to show off how very smart he was, though he was smart. Early fell on the right side of that line. It was obvious he was smart and he couldn’t hide it but there was always a more of a self deprecation to it and a sort of a charming world weary cynicism about him, just the right amount of cynicism, which is a difficult thing to pull off.

Gilroy did ParkLive a GAA show which was modelled on Soccer AM which flopped. Then he went to the World Cup in 2006 to do some “offbeat” segment interviewing fans and that flopped too. The most memorable thing about it was Apres Match taking the piss out of it. Gilroy by this stage was beginning to pigeonhole himself as an Irish Tim Lovejoy, and you don’t want to be that.

That really fucked Gilroy and he ended up being shunted around at Newstalk out of sport and into current affairs which didn’t really suit him, and sort of pushed him out of the very thing he had created. By the time he came back to sport he sort of had his tail between his legs a bit and had been usurped by the new lads, especially Murphy, who was able to play the smug, lippy character but do it better.

Gilroy being pushed out of the fold was a bit like the guy who founded Oasis being shunted aside.

There was a Kerry fella there early doors too iirc. Think he went off a ran a similar show on Radio Kerry?

Think ye are overegging the revolutionary bit. It was a clear copy of talksport which had taken off a decade before off the ball. It was certainly a new thing for the Irish market but it was hardly a new idea. I’m sure talksport stole it from some one as well.

Whatever happened the lad Declan (Carty??) who used to come on after them? Dodgy theme tune and me man sounding like he was tucking into a baguette on air.

Like others, I would have listened to OTB a fair bit back in the day. I liked McDevitt and Early, but Murph was a difficult listen. By the time they were gone I wasn’t listening to them much at all. Too much banter etc.

In the years that have followed, with the reintegration of Gilroy, the emergence of Joe Molloy and a plethora of others, I realise we had it much better than I realised in early 2013. I don’t bother with the Second Captains podcast, but fair fucks to them for making a success of it.

I’d often throw on the free podcast after a big weekend of gaa or soccer. Ken is good value. I’ve never paid for it as I wouldn’t listen to more than the free hour or so every week.

Gilroy had a fantastic sub-gate in fairness. Yer man Shane Hannon is struggling to replace Eoin Sheehan though. They’ve brought in a few nobodies too which is never a good thing.

Woolie and Gizzy Lyng taking over in 2013 was absolutely hilarious stuff. Woolie rabitting on about Lukaku as if he was some sort of Footballing connoisseur.

I must admit to not having a scooby do about what happened to these fellas in the last five or more years. So they do podcasts for a fiver a month? But I have Spotify for a tenner a month with a million podcasts on everything so not sure I need this. These lads must do next to zero advertising for new customers as I don’t even see their names out there, and I guess I should be their target audience. What ever happened the second captains tv show as that was actually a decent idea? I guess they do roadshows now instead?

On OTB, their talent bench is unfortunately really threadbare these days. I think they are missing Eoin Sheehan something awful who despite coming across as annoying to me initially really grew on me and he was the best facilitator on the show in recent years for my money, granted this was in a sea of mediocrity.
