Serbia V Republic of Ireland September 5th Belgrade incorporating the Oman match

It’s about the future, pal. We beat Italy a few months ago.

Eamonn singling out Whelan here.

I don’t think Whelan was particularly good or bad tonight. He was poor enough, the same as everyone else. But in the same breath Eamonn is talking about possession. The one thing Whelan does offer is a bit of possession. It’s not particularly constructive, and he’s obviously limited but he’s consistently our most prominent player on the ball. The absurd argument for Hoolahan is welcome because it’s so patently ridiculous but he’s having a go at Brady and McCarthy too and suggesting Quinn or Hoolahan are the only options for midfield. Two extremely different players.

You didn’t even watch the fucking match, for fucks sake.
Who’s the fucking bluffer?

Can’t get on the Reading team ffs

Japp knows his shit

Better than McCarthy apparently. In fairness made a difference tonight and Whelan is finished at this level IMO. Offered nothing tonight

Give over ffs :joy:

They did, about 65 minutes too late. We could have won that game. Two of their best players were missing. If you’re going to play long ball you have to play Slab ahead of Long

McCarthy should take over the Whelan role when he gets back to fitness and put Hendrick and Arter/Brady in beside him.

Kilkenny bate yesterday, Slab scores his first international goal and an all Ireland U21 final on Saturday - could be a great week to be a Waterford man!

Agreed Quinn isn’t a replacement for Whelan a completely different beast. I think McCarthy should replace Whelan now though and be let out his stamp on it in the defensive role where I think he’s most comfortable

I think he already has that role. It’s a real shame he wasn’t fit for tonight.

Pfft, some lads here don’t know shit about qualifying for a tournament. It’s all about winning your home games and picking up points on the road lads. Great start to the campaign. We’ll walk this group.

Hoolahan wouldn’t have made the slightest bit of difference there if he started. Would have put us under more pressure if anything, considering the shit pitch

I’m nodding my head in agreement here mate

Absolutely. That’s the future. A 3 of McCarthy, Brady, Hendrick is the future. It’s a bit lightweight but it’s definitely our best option. But I think when you’re missing McCarthy that Whelan remains the best choice - particularly in a tough away game where you have designs on keeping the ball. He doesn’t do much productive but he does get on the ball. Hoolahan obviously won’t give you that but Quinn doesn’t really either.

Hope Brady slaps Dunphy

Indeed. We’d have been slaughtered if Hoolahan was playing tonight.
