Just looking at Paul McStay’s goal in August 1994, there were Celtic fans there.

There was a 1-1 draw at Ibrox in April 1994. Think Collins might have got a screamer of a free kick in that game as well. That’s possibly the game you have in mind for when Celtic fans were banned.

That’s correct.

Just checked it on youtube there and its clear from the footage of the goals that it was the April 1994 game that Celtic fans were banned from. Collins got another cracker of a free kick there as well.

Munster fans are a despicable bunch.

Celtic’s support in Ireland has always been large due to the historical connection and the club’s incredible history.

However prior to the advent of Sky Sports, Celtic games were never televised in Ireland and the games could only be followed by a haphazard radio connection or by actually going to them. The Cup semi-final in 91/92 was the first Celtic game I ever remember being available live in Ireland - actually I think the first derby of the 89/90 season (a 1-1 draw with Dziekanowski scoring) may have been broadcast live on RTE but I was in England at the time so I’m not certain.

From then until the end of the 97/98 season, there was better coverage but it was intermittent and haphazard. Most derby games (not all) were televised in Ireland from about 1994/95 on but coverage of the rest of the league campaign was still far from comprehensive. None of the last four games of the 97/98 run-in for instance, were broadcast live in Ireland.

Only in the 98/99 season when the SPL was set up did regular live weekly coverage begin. It became much easier to follow the games.

That may be why you think there was an upturn in support for Celtic in Ireland around this time.

But pretty much every boy in my primary school class followed Celtic, or at least had an interest in them, and that was in the late 80s and early 90s.

I’m sure some of you have seen this already but this was a quality debate on BT the other night.

yeah
BBC radio 2 with Roddy Forsyth was it really wasnt it in the late 80s early 90s
according to most on here football was invented in 92/3 when SS showed man city QPR on monday night football, you are right tho in that i remember them covering the liverpool pompey FA cup semi final replay in april 92 so that would tie in with their coverage of the SFA cup semi
given that before then you bascially could not see even highlights of celtic games, i remember MOTD on cup final night did show the scottish equivlants goals as they both KO’d at the same time and maybe sportsnight during the week would have a comprehensive UEFA cup highlights package… the pull of Celtic really was remarkable as ITV used to show " the match" on sunday afternoons for the usual first div fix… but still people followed celtic
i wonder was it the Bonner , chris morris, big mick element at the time or something stronger than that?

was celtic passed down to you?
i took it up of my own accord,

That’s hilarious. Sutty is a gas character.

Yes. My father went over to games in the late 60s/early 70s and was involved when the first Celtic supporters club was set up in Dublin. He was at the 1969 and 1971 Cup finals.

He brought me to a game against Dundee United on the 87/88 run in and I was completely sold after that (even though it was only a 0-0 draw), although I’d already been following them for a at least a year.

Irish players in any club team in UK football will always lead to an upturn in support here for that team. Aston Villa in the early to mid 90s for instance, Leeds in the late 90s too.

They lost that match because of Brendan’s tactics.

Sky Sports were sending their A Team of Tyler/Gray to Old Firm games in the mid 1990s, probably Gazza related. Did they not broadcast quite a few games around then?

I was there that day. Moravcek was as good a player as ever played for celtic.

The two most despicable rascist incidedent in British soccer were Viv Anderson at Parkhead when playing for Forest & Mark Walters at Parkhead . Google each and they are shocking .

Celtic and Rangers are equally odious organisations . Irish people with a GAA background should scorn both organisations . Each corporate behemoths without a community base .

Link to viv anderson at Celtic patk please

I don’t remember seeing or hearing about that though I recall our centre half and the ref both going at it below in Avondale when the ref (FM) gave a penalty after our goalie was poleaxed, everybody assumed play was stopped and he let go of the ball and our full back picked it up. Goalie then saves the penalty and Freddie (WHOOPS) ordered it retaken for encroachment. It was like Frazier/Ali after that.

Watching back a few clips this morning. Great celebration from Lustig when we get a goal kick at the end.

Look at the thing beside Brown’s right shoulder.

From 94/95 to 97/98 inclusive Sky broadcast two of the four derby league games live, always the New Year game and usually the last game, although the key game of the 96/97 season in March was not covered live by Sky. I think BBC Scotland/STV had one live and the first meeting of the season was not broadcast live at all. Scottish Cup and League Cup games between the two were also broadcast live on Sky during this period.

Tyler and Gray commentated on those games but Ian Crocker became Sky’s main commentator on Scottish football from 98/99 on, and later commentated for Setanta.

Sky covered other league games in sporadic fashion in the '94-'98 period, usually with Jock Brown commentating up to '97 when he made his ill-fated move to become Celtic “general manager”. They also broadcast one game from each round of both cups.
