Shane MacGowan (RIP)

I’d imagine if you were Irish living in London/America/Australia, you’d feel a little homesick watching that today.

What age are you?

Just watching it now. When you leave home in your 20s with a suitcase thinking you’d be back in six months (and tell your parents that), and you’re still abroad in America 30 years later, that’s a sobering moment. Not going home for years, then with children so joyful occasions, and then for funerals…

Yes, yes you would.

I can’t talk to anyone here in this godawful cultural wasteland about this. I know at home it would be all anyone would want to talk about.
I think one of the truly great things about Ireland is that we place great value on artists, that is, meaningful artists. Ones that have actually contributed something different or unique. Or ones that have battled their own demons. In the case of Shane, Sinead and Christy, Ireland is both proud and fiercely protective of these people. And that’s a good and beautiful thing.

I cannot imagine anything remotely similar happening here. Unless they’ve been on Dancing with the Stars or whatever the fuck it’s called, no one gives a fuck.

Lisa O’Neill is a marvellous singer btw.
I highly recommend her album All of this is Chance, it’s superb.

Did McGowan still own the pub in Phibsborough or had he sold it?

We punch above our weight culturally. Wherever you go there’s always someone who knows an Irish band or singer and it can act as a conversation starter.

Yerra.

That’s like saying we produce the best hurlers in Ireland.

We’re familiar with them and get a bit carried away.

I could name 3 or 4 well know Polish artists if I met a Polish lad. *

Do you think we’ve a massive advantage in music, culture etc as we are native English speaking?

Do out a quick European Championship of popular music and see who wins.

Can’t see Italy or Spain or Germany or France winning this one.

I don’t think we’d like that, England would win it every single time

Scotland could pull off the odd shock win. Ireland would be like the rubby team, eternal tog shitters at the QF stage.

U2 would give us a punchers chance. Up there with the most number 1 albums of any band in history

If only there was a competition with countries from Europe and beyond competing to see who could produce the best song. We’d definitely walk it every year…

Could be a lot of infighting in the team.

We’d have a much more united camp. Under UEFA rules however we could lose some key players to Northern Ireland but I think we have the strength in depth to make up for it.

I like Sweden’s chances of doing well while the high energy Europop game of the Dutch could see them being a factor.

Overall though I’d see the superior Home Nations technique make shit of the crack continentals.

A granny rule could open up the competition a bit. Frank Sinatra and Madonna playing in the Italian midfield could make them serious contenders while George Michael would bring a bit of class to an otherwise poor Greece team.

That’s a bit like the difference between the PDC and BDO World Darts Championships. One is obviously better than the other. The PDC can be enjoyable but the BDO is the one they all want to win.

It’s all subjective. If English wasn’t our native language, who knows but we do punch above our weight. Saying that the UK has produced some amount of quality bands. Manchester alone could give Ireland a run for its money and half of the Mancunin bands are Irish stock!

Thanks for this recommendation. I seen her support Sixto Rodriguez in 2012 at Vicar St and thought she was an abomination. I even cringed at every time she’d be rolled out on Irish television. I’ve been listening to her new album since your post. It’s an incredible piece of work, really special. Then I went back and listened to all her albums chronologically, and the gulf of improvement in every album is starkly evident. God bless her. We’ve a gem on our hands.
