Great to have Shay at Villa Park.
The best keeper we’ve had since Bozzy.
Let’s hope his injury worries are a thing of the past.

Feel sorry for Seamus having to spend his last years in the game at that miserable, non entity of a football club.
Maybe you Celtic supporters can offer him advice on how you cope with it

Wouldn’t know anything about that.
Ah it’s going to be great to have four top Irish internationals playing for a club with Irish roots this season.
Where once there was McGrath, Staunton, Townsend and Houghton now there is Given, Dunne, Clark and Ireland.
Shay Given has retired from International Football.
Thanks for the memories Shay.
Probably time alright. A great servant and a shame his send off went the way it did but he will go down as an Irish legend.
Very true. Westwood has big boots to fill. We’ll see.
Pity he went out on a low, our greatest ever keeper in my eyes
All the very best of luck to him. It’s probably the right time for him to retire as his mistakes were starting to become more frequent but he was a brilliant goalkeeper for us for a very long time.
Think it the 2006 WC qualifying campaign under Kerr where he was utterly immense throughout.
+3
The first leg at home to Iran in WC playoff in 2001,immense!
Shay was a busted flush in the Euros. He retired a year too late.
+1
Pulled off a gem of a save in the second leg as well to keep us in it.
Simply put, our best player over the last 10 years, in my view.
Is this really the right time? Wasn’t injury to blame for his poor showing in the Euros? It’s less than a year since he played like the re-incarnation of Lev Yashin against Russia in Moscow. He hardly looked past it that day. I’m disappointed, I have to say.
Imagine Westwood gets injured sometime :o
Disappointing to end his international career with his shambolic displays in the Euros.
Thought he should have came out, fought for his shirt and finish on a high. Westwood has the makings of a cracking keeper but is suffering under MON’s typical keeper mismanagement at the moment. Would have been good if Given could have stayed on until Westwood was firmly established. Now a Sunderland reserve needs to step up into a very difficult situation.
Cant help feeling that Trap dropping him from the squad for this friendly has played a part in this decision.
Given was brilliant under Kerr in particular and in his prime was a fantastic shotstopper with great agility. Certainly more mistakes are creeping into his game and very susceptible to injuries these days which has had an impact on his agility. But by far the best keeper we have ever produced. Before Westwood came on the scene, I think we can all remember what we were like when he was unavailable. Wayne Henderson, Paddy Kenny…yikes.
Great for him to finish out his days at Villa Park. Not sure if there is more than 2 seasons left in him at club level either. Lambert bringing back Guzan suggests there will be more of an equal fight for the number one slot at the Villa this year too. Maybe that played a part in his decision.
He clearly wasn’t dropped for the friendly you weirdo.
Don’t forget you would have dropped him for the Euros.
Declaring himself fit for the Euros when he clearly wasn’t is nigh on unforgiveable imo.
I wish him well nonetheless
