The launch of Jonathan Sugarman’s book about Fine Gael’s and Fianna Fáil’s part in the banking collapse was last Friday week and certain sections of the media were sniffing around the story early last week. Similarly, DOB’s court case against the Dáil was still in progress this time last week too.

As has happened countless times before and will happen many times again, it suited both FG and FF to use the tried and tested diversionary tactic: “Oh look, over there, the IRA in the 1980s!” The Irish Independent, Newstalk and RTE were only too happy to oblige.

Since then the initial post launch publicity on the back of the Sugarman book has naturally eased off and the court has reserved its judgment on the DOB case until after Christmas. It’s a new week and there’s no real need to keep this Sinn Féin attack going. It’ll be resurrected the next time it’s convenient for them to do so.
