Significant people's (not celebrities) deaths

Belfast Republican Bobby Storey.

I recently learned he is a nephew of boxing trainer Gerry Storey

Michael Kennedy, advisor to a slew of Irish footballers in the 90’s and 00’s.

RIP John Lewis

I’ll miss them Christmas ads

Herman Cain, Republican presidential candidate in 2016, dead from Covid-19.

Tested positive for it nine days after attending the Trump rally in Tulsa.

Some New Zealand rugby player died

If he were white, there’s lads on here who would say he was a stupid fat moron.

He was a stupid fat moron. Also a sexual predator. However, this is sad, Lord have mercy on him.

It seems to be very dangerous for black men? I thought Cain was fit enough?

Was he not being treated for cancer. If so this nearly counts as a suicide.

I don’t know anything about it. This will send the Trump supporters mad - “his death was really cancer, the numbers are fake!”

If he was a republican presidential candidate, it’s a reasonable default.

Cain wasn’t Abel.

Eugene McCabe the playwright. Do you remember King of the Castle @anon67715551

I do indeed. In McGahern’s novel That they might face the rising sun a character not unlike Scober has a prominent role. It’s uncanny that in so many of our great novels many of the principal characters are a mere stones throw away from some chancer we all knew.

In the McGahern novel our hero’s son would have happily burned the author out of house and home for the portrayal of his late father. We all of course nodded wisely and concurred with his often loud outbursts while all the time thinking McGahern didn’t go half hard enough.

Scober was a great character. Were you shocked at the time?

Me shocked. Hardly. The era the book was pitched in you wouldn’t be surprised by anything. There were some absolutely outlandish things done that made the internet of it’s time (Gossipmongers). If a cow 10 miles away calved into a boghole you’d hear of it by nightfall. The owner of the unfortunate beast would be forever deemed useless /careless.

The ratio of truth to fact may have been 50/50. Oh! You’d hear the odd strange tale still.

I found it pretty shocking when I saw it on the telly. I might have had a more sheltered background
