Stan Bowles

A legend- R.I.P.
some scandal he only won five England caps… then again as Rod Marsh said about him - if he could pass a betting shop half as well as he could pass a football he’d be the richest man alive

I heard one about him deciding to take a corner to asks the fans who won the grand national :joy:

An old piece of 70’s London graffiti:

“Stan Bowles has laid on more balls than Fiona Richmond”

There was a banner at the 1984 All-Ireland football final which said “Brian Mullins lays on more balls than Joanne Hayes”.

Dublin got fairly laid on that day.

QPR won 13 of their last 15 games of the 1975/76 season, drawing one and losing one. That was 27 points from their final 30.

That still wasn’t good enough to win the league as Liverpool took 25 points from their final 32 and 17 from the last 18 to win the title by one point, scoring three times in the last 13 minutes to win 3-1 at Wolves in the final game. The title was always decided in a night game at Molineux in the 1970s. David Fairclough scored seven goals in the last 8 games, mostly as substitute.

QPR fucked the title away by losing 3-2 at Norwich in the third last game. They had been top of the table up to that.

There were some proper names on that QPR team. Frank McLintock, David Webb, Don Masson, Stan Bowles, Gerry Francis, John Hollins, Don Givens. Mick Leach (not the Shamrock Rovers one). Dave Sexton as manager.

It was 2 points for a win in 1976

Phil Parkes as well in goal.

The great Dan McCartan passed away over the weekend, I’d missed that.

There’s a good one about an unnamed All-Star footballer on an early 70’s trip to the USA.

He copped off with a yank quare one and the following morning was summoned for an account by a few of the touring party. “Well, what was she like?”, he was asked. “Lads, says he, I never saw the likes of it in my life. She’d black togs on her like Dan McCartan!”

Did he fulfill the dream of seeing Mark play with Down after, I dont recall the name.

It was a terrible weight of expectation to put on the young lad.

Twas. But shur thats the dangers of coming after a great. I’d often wonder how lucky it is that @Nembo_Kid never had any youngsters. Imagine the pressure that Bob Radcliffe brings?
