He wasnāt the worst. But he got caught up in some scandal about twenty years ago. Iām not sure of the circumstances but he tried to make representations for some fella either accused of a serious crime or had been convicted and he wrote a reference letter. Something along those lines anyway.
Iirc he wrote directly to the judge on ministerial notepaper asking for lenience for someone convicted of Dannyfoleying. Also tried to play both sides in PD/FF split. Not the worst by a good distance but hardly a shining beacon either
Funnily enough, he had an armed guard on his modest enough house for years in the late seventies /early eighties. End of his Road often blocked off by gardai.

A former minister for defence, I didnāt realise the garda protection stretched that far, I remember Peter Barry had gardai at his house for years but his role in the Anglo Irish Agreement probably made it necessary.
