Pilate tried his best to save Christ, he put it to the Jewish mob that they could choose a career criminal to go before him but the Jews insisted Christ die.

Why? Pilate is known to have been a particularly brutal governor. He’d have no compunction about ordering the execution of a troublesome Jew.
