I think weâve made a mistake in not reacting to the spaces between the lines. Silva, Fabregas and Iniesta have propped up in that area time and time again tonight, we should have compressed that space, even if it meant dropping very deep. When theyâve got the ball in there we have looked in big bother.
Balotelli is trying to do too much, Spain are a beautiful sight when they play like this. I hope the Italians can get one early or this could get ugly
Particularly when thereâs no central striker you need to compress that space and Iniesta has taken up some excellent positions. Canât allow them to pick passes from there and getting widemen cutting inside behind the full backs is causing all sorts of problems.
Doesnât hurt Italy that much from an attacking sense anyway to have the likes of Pirlo and DDR back there because they can pass it from deep. They can even afford to leave Montolivo up nearer Busuets to run on to balls held up by Cassano and Balotelli. Iâd certainly switch one or both of Marchisio and Montolivo who have been too quiet.
Spain playing at their Euro 2008 level tonight, I am very cynical about their fitness levels.
Looking at the second goal again and it really is a smashing pass from Xavi. Timing and weight are as perfect as Iniestaâs for the first.
RTĂ sneering of the people who called Spain boring and yet they were part of that choir before the start, suggesting that Spain werenât setup right and that they werenât making proper use of their players or the space on the pitch. Giles went so far as to say that âgood managers would know where the space is but Spain put too many bodies in midfield.â Now theyâre glowing of course.
