What’s happening at the polling stations is a reflection of the need for the Madrid conservatives to look tough ahead of what’s coming next - another blast of austerity for a country that’s been crippled by it.

There wouldn’t have been a huge amount to celebrate in any referendum outcome as the independence movement has been purely nationalist and economically is fairly neo-liberal. But the police hospitalising close to 1000 people has turned a political flash-point into something that will have massive repercussions. How many radical Catalan nationalists have they created today?
