St Patrick's Day

I’m surprised by the apathy to Patrick’s Day here. There was mention of a lack of sport compared to Stephen’s Day but there’s usually a feast of stuff on (depending on how it falls) from GAA Club Finals, Cheltenham, random EPL/SPL football, possibly Six Nations, a couple of years ago we had Ireland beating Pakistan in the CWC, as well as the big one - Leinster Schools’ Rugby Football Cup Final. I’ve witnessed gangs of 16 year olds getting locked on the street and puke stained toilets in pubs and stuff but I never saw anything that would have made me consider not going out on Patrick’s Day.

I drank in Chaplins two years ago off D’olier Street watching the culmination of the Six Nations where Paul O’Connell ended up costing us the Grand Slam. Grand little boozer, not too packed and quite comfortable. Ended up in the Polish nightclub upstairs of all places.

Anyway while I was quite content in my drinking hole there was something not quite right about the day. I couldn’t put my finger on it but it was just a weird day. A day off in the middle of March with everyone out drinking just seemed weird.

Heading to Berlin on the thursday before and back on the Monday so Paddy’s will be a day of rest for me also.

I remember cycling down O’ Connell at about 4/5pm last year after the parade and the amount of green wearing, flag weilding drunken scumbags falling around the place was unreal. A horrible day to be out and about in Dublin.

Attending the Skol Cup Final fell through in the middle of last week so I’ve been in work today rather than wasting a holiday day. The decision was whether to go out tonight or all day tomorrow. After some careful consideration, I’m going to attempt to do both. 'Mon the drunk swarms of Irish people over the next 36 hours.

Unless tonights adventures lead me off on some trail for tomorrow I’m goin to take it handy. Eyre Square will be horrific tomorrow I’d say. The burberry hat brigade’s national holiday.

Going to Croker for my maiden club finals day, then booze it up in town, Stephen’s Green possibly, Hourican’s maybe, somewhere like that.

Best St Patrick’s Day was in the Irish embassy in Berne, seven years ago.My wife and I were the only real Irish there, free food and booze. Also there was a reception in the US embassy the night before. It really seemed to piss off the Brits we were working with,as well as the wearing of small tricolours by the missus and me.

I have decided to have a few easy pints tonight (copyright Puke) and I guarantee to abstain tomorrow*

  • This is not a guarantee.

You learn to adjust to this phenomenon Farmer.
Merry days last week in the Sen Hslins borough.
No guarantee you would enjoy it though I’m “fairly sure” you could make a good attempt.

I’m not doing anything. Stupid shit. A Welsh farm boy? Go and fuck

Jog on then so.

Nope. I’m staying put.

Struggling to get an 8,000 word History dissertation done by Thursday afternoon, so probably nothing but study all day. Might watch the hurling, on the off chance De La Salle make a game of it.

As Irish as McGeady he is.

Thought Americans made a bigger celebration out of Saint Patrick’s Day than real Irish people.

Im bringing the Wife and kids to the parade in Graignamanagh tomorrow, they can hardly sleep tonight such is the excitement over it,god be with the days when i used to drink the shit out of it someplace to celebrate the event, not anymore though.Cant wait for the parade tomorrow,

Me: ‘Will we go to the pub?’

Jugs: ‘Fook it - we will.’

Anybody not getting pissed today is a traitor to their country.

'Mon the Irish.
