With a sin bin/black card rule youâd see Tipp target Sean Finn this weekend with a bit of arm grappling where both players would collapse in a heap and the forward getting the benefit of the doubt
It could and probably would but you hit offenders hard. At the moment, most teams are not looking to score goals. Unless, that changes, game will just evolve into a turkey shoot.
The issue seems to be that limerick scored too many points. If it had stayed a contest and they scored just 15 more would it be an issue?
Could they take the lead of big. Bash cricket and have more razzmatazz
Pasty country folk playing and being interviewed isnât helping the spread
Teams are hitting from distance because defences are packed. A heavier ball rewards packed defences even more. If you remove the punishment for packed defences you only increase the benefit of doing it even more. Teams will have to stay pushed up to make it harder to shoot from distance. They will evolve to do so
Defenses are packed as game is slowed down due to obsession with possession. Move the ball more direct and you will create more goal chances.
Only allow scores in the attacking half?
It doesnât really. If the defender can only land a clearance around the midfield Area or the half forward line itâll draw teams out. The reason teams sit so deep is because the ball can travel so far.
Move the ball more direct and Davy and his two sweepers will eat you alive
i doubt it. even if it was a closer encounter and 4 or 5 points in it the argument would still stand.
I have no issue with there being 60 points + scored in a hurling game and another 12 or so wides, but Iâd prefer it to be the exception rather than the rule that there are 70 odd point shots in a given game.
Anybody that thinks that tosh is acceptable is off their head in my opinion. A point every 30 seconds gets fairly boring fairly quickly. The art of defending seems to have died as well. Teams would be coughing 2-20 and claiming their backs played well.
I rewatched the 2014 semi final between limerick and Kilkenny. It was played in the pouring rain and while their was a host of bad mistakes it was absolutely riveting. Every possession was contested. Every score felt it really mattered in the context of a game.
Nowadays when a lad gets ball 90 yards from goal youâd Expect him to pop it over the bar. The amount of time a ball is contested between two players is getting rearer and rearer.
I think there is a bit of an over reaction to last weekend. Laois and Clare are possibly ranked 9 + 10 out of the Liam McCarthy teams currently. Take Tony Kelly out of that Clare team on Sunday and they are pathetic.
They drew in Nowlan Park and won below in Wexford park in the league. The absence of Duggan and Conlon weakened them severely.
Agreed and this comes back to steps and tackling. The whole emphasis of the game now is on making and breaking tackles. Whichever teams gets on top in this regard wins for the most part. Teams are now very much coached to keep possession and take on the tackle rather than looking to move the ball quickly. If steps rule was enforced and tightened up which gave an emphasis to move the ball quickly and directly this would change the game.
One of the better and unique spectacles and skills in the game of hurling than two lads going hammer and thongs to contest a ball played drilled in on top of them be it low or high. Whether it is the forward winning the ball and scoring or the back going bald headed and getting out in front and I think it is something which should be prioritised in the game. It is a far greater spectacle than lads rucking for balls and being swallowed up by two or three tacklers.
I think the punishment has to be on the scoreboard.
Include the D as the penalty area and that would sufficiently punish the crime.
Although you may be need to introduce a point only free so as not to be giving penalties for technical fouls like overcarrying, steps etc.
See I donât believe that part. Maybe certain teams do favour scoring from out the field, but plenty of teams have the creation of goal chances as a fairly major part of their gameplan. Including the team that won the All-Ireland.
Thereâs more than one way to skin a cat. And obviously teams set up defensively to stop goals being conceded too.
They were well weakened by the losses of Collins, Conlon, Duggan and the Galvins. Laois also down a good few from last year also. Kk can absorb losses such Mullen other counties canât.
Yeah, it wasnât a true reflection of Clare. A number of players who showed good form in the league have been very poor since the return from Covid and didnât feature as a result. A couple of the under 20s were under consideration for the 26 and were then made unavailable in the final days before the match as well. I donât think the ceiling is particularly high with this current group but it was a poor showing form them especially in the second half. This year is a shot to nothing, I think next year will be a fairer reflection on where they are at.
Think people overrating Kilkenny. Iâd fancy Limerick, Tipp and Galway to beat them and would place Wexford on a par with KK at least.
Do away with the hand pass and outlaw traveling with the ball in your hand. Maybe allow one step or two to settle and/or turn, but after that it has to touch the hurley and canât come back into the hand.
