I thought I heard somewhere that lots of other sports were reporting higher scoring averages for games played behind closed doors.
Great Post.
The other factor which helps the speed of the game is the quality of the surfaces. That to me is the one transformational item that has helped all sports evolve.
One was Kilkenny.
Cork
Very fair point. Another point which I read somewhere else was that a GAA pitch dimensions were agreed upon many decades ago for when it was a different game. Obviously it is not possible to do so but in an ideal world the pitches should be extended to take into account that the ball now travelled faster and longer.
What would happen if the game became 17 a side? Would two more players in the middle third lead to less space and opportunities to shoot from out the field?
Davy Fitz would be able to play 2 more sweepers.
PS and most clubs would be even more fucked unable to field teams
Also in the Limerick game the ref blew early and consistently for over carrying and pulling and dragging, If it got messy he called it either way. This cleaned up the game and made it more open. I didnât see the other game.
Some of the frees given to both sides were beyond soft .
Iâd be interested to see what the game of hurling looked like if the steps rule was enforced stringently. Right now the ball carrier seems to get undue advantage carrying the ball into a tackle and is allowed to take additional steps to drive through the tackle.
From what i see the majority of lads called for steps it is due to them being on their third or fourth step by the time they take on the tackler and it is easy for the ref to pull them up on.
Make it 4 steps or 4 seconds with the ball in hand, whichever comes first. Which would make it far easier for the ref to interpret
Thereâs been a substantial increase in the amount of time the ball is in play in soccer since the crowds went. Wonder if thatâs the case in hurling too
The advantage rule seems to have only made this worse/more confusing.
The hand pass is rarely that in hurling . The ball is thrown more often than not
I donât know if there is a magic number; individual games will always take on a life of their own. If a match has a team playing a sweeper, there will often be less scores. If Clare had pushed up on Limerick the last day, Limerick definitely wouldnât have scored 0-36 but they might have scored 5-20 (maybe not, who knows).
I think generally people want to see goals, they want to see less frees, they want the ball to be in play as much as possible and everyone enjoys those long, ferocious passages of play.
I do think that indirect frees for certain offences wouldnât be a bad thing; I donât think you can do much about frees in general but if there was consistency in refereeing, teams will adapt to what is or isnât allowed.
I think if you want to see a marked increase in goal chances; the best way would be to punish cynical fouling. Why would any defender not pull down an attacker in on goal if theyâre outside the square now? Taking a yellow for the team is worth not conceding a goal in most situations. The likes of Cody will vehemently oppose that, maybe most managers would; but any team worth a fuck will do it. Tipp were extremely cynical last year when they had to be, Limerick are the same.
Black card ???
Thereâs nothing wrong with hurling lads. The two games so far had mismatches. The 4 next weekend should be a lot tighter. Weâll see then if this is even an issue
I think a sinbin would cut it out fairly lively. Be a huge punishment in hurling. I wouldnât be totally opposed.
As of now, I would encourage my players to haul a fella down if they beat them and are heading for goal. In any other situation, there should be no real reason to foul. I definitely wouldnât be saying that if I thought I was going to lose a corner-back.
I donât quite follow that. There were 30 points in the Clare Limerick match in the first half when it was a contest. There was a goal and 28 points in the second half when one side utterly dominated.
Good post Aristotle. But is there down sides to indirect frees? Would teams commit technical fouls just to waste time or if they are overwhelmed so they can cover back? Youâd have to make all frees scoring within the last 5-10 minutes or so and or, as should long be the case, stop the clock when itâs out of play, even just in that timeframe. No way should a game ultimately be decided by an extended injury or delay bringing a goalie up or whatever
Maybe a very simple solution is make it 4 pts for a goal.
That could lead to more cynical fouling To stop goals .
