Stick hurling: Parental Guidance advised

would a standardized Hurley do away with the art of making a hurley? All the makers have their own little kink in a design and finish around the edge of the heel etc and the shape of the Bas.

I presume if it was standardized then it would be a spec that’s sent out or a template and they’d be generic?

Diarmuid Ryan and Aidan McCarthy are both nailed on starters for Clare

I don’t think they are, the rule book makes no distinction from what I can see. If they had to go back to a regulation sized hurl it would give the attacking team more incentive to go for goal, don’t see anything wrong with that.

I don’t think it would have to be standardised really; just that it can’t exceed the maximum width.

from toe to heel? that would affect some lads designs wouldn’t it?

would thickness need to be standardized?

About 7 or 8 maybe?

It’d definitely affect their current designs somewhat, but I’m sure they could work with it. After all, they definitely used to make hurleys of those sizes.

Rules don’t say anything about thickness so there is probably scope there.

Look at the photos of DJ hurling at his peak. At least a 35 inch “Dowling“ Hurley and small bas

Do you think that it could just be a bit of a coincidence? A lot of the top teams are very established at the moment.

Nothing wrong at all also it will change up puck out strategy as ypu can’t go as long. The defence can pack out the half forward line forcing teams to go short and vise versa

No I’d say the opposite and say that Tipp and Galway who have racked up the most of these Minor/Under 17/20/21 titles in the last 3 or 4 years are crying out for a few 19 or 20 year old’s to come in and rip it up but they aren’t really there.

Tipp yes. Galway look to have more than enough options and have younger players coming in, if not very young players.

Galway could do with injecting some pace into the side around midfield and half forward.Young Kilcommins looked a sensational minor and was playing a bit with the seniors last yr but is missing atm for some reason. Midfield/halfforward line with Coen, Davy Burke,Joe Cooney and Cathal Mannion starting will be burned with pace.

I think Morrissey is their youngest at 22.

They have a few between 23-25 alright but they are not that young in the grand scheme of things.

Cody is trying a couple alright at 20/21 nowadays but I don’t think any of them are real game changers.

I’d agree with part of this sentiment but there’s a challenge when colleges reopen every September in that you’re usually missing your college lads for sessions during the week and most of them will be tempted out on the beer the week of a championship match. Not having any championship matches when you’re at your peak fitness in July and August is frustrating as these are the months when most people have more time off work and may be that little bit fresher for a championship game during this period.

I think you’re making this out to be a phenomenon when it’s just a lull really.

I hope you are right but its a pretty long lull when you really have to go back to 2017 since the last real proper debutants under 19/20 ripped up a Championship.

All the talk about the sliotar/rule changes wouldn’t be happening if there was a young Joe Canning, Austin Gleeson or Tony Kelly breaking through now to get people excited.

Does Kyle Hayes not count no?

After looking at the scorelines of all hurling games the previous week, it got me thinking. If I was starting my career again, where would I play. And to be honest, the answer is a no brainer. Half-back.

Shane was lucky to get out before Kiely turned him into a half back.

He made his debut in 2017. Likewise Coleman/Kingston/Fitzgibbon from Cork and Rory O’Connor from Wexford.

The last great summer.
