Jimmy Magee again proving that he’s past it, on Saturday night, referring to Paul McCloskey as McCullough.
And in the Curragh yesterday, another one of our elder statesmen, Dessie Scahill, referring to the novice Georgebernardshaw as the veteran “George Washington”.
A ripe night for this on RTE’s Champions League coverage.
George Hamilton during the replay of Torres’ goal when Senderos was left floundering:
‘The speedboat versus the oil tanker and the speedboat was always going to turn first.’
What an idiot!
I had a giggle at the Fenerbahce centre forward’s name though I’m not sure if he was sporting half an erection during the game tonight. Ray Houghton was adamant he didn’t get a ride during the first half when he shot instead of passed:
‘Semih never got his head up there.’
Ray later bemoaned Chelsea’s lacklustre performance:
‘Chelsea are not playing with positive positiveness.’
Couple of classics from Craig Doyle and Robbie Earle last night as well
Doyle on Wenger giving out after the game - ‘Completely out of character for Wenger after a game to give out - if he gives out then you know it is something serious’ Eh - this is the guy who fought with an opposing manager after a game and called for a player to be banned for life after he mistimed a challenge. He is always giving out.
Earle on Gerrard’s comment that he had his worst game for Liverpool - ‘well I tell you what he must have pretty high standards. Look at the corner for Hyypia’s goal. Look how well he took that penalty’ A professional footballer able to take a penalty and a corner. Wow.
Earle on Torres - ‘The biggest compliment I can pay Torres is that he is almost as important to Liverpool now as Gerrard’. - Wrong again Robbie, he is more important.
Earle on Liverpool Chelsea - ‘The big difference between this and the other matches is that the first leg is at Anfield. Liverpool have to come out in the first leg and that won’t suit them. Chelsea to go through’. - Did last night’s game not tell you anything Robbie? Arsenal went 2-1 and only had to level it to go through on the virtue of away goals. If anything Liverpool should hold back in the first leg so as not concede an away goal and then attack Chelsea in Stamford Bridge…
Was going to quote George Hamiltons spake about the speedboat and the tanker but Bandage beat me to it. The sad thing is though it wasn’t a bad comparison. Senderos is pure muck. Not trying to stir the shit or aowt but wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up in Rangers or Celtic at some stage…
Last night before the game he was questioning the Liverpool team and stating Hyppia and Skrtel would never have played more than 3 games together and no big games beside each other anyway. Both Brady and Souness talked over him and said Hyppia and Skrtel were the central defensive partnership last Wednesday night in the first leg which was actually a game Dunphy covered.
At the end then when Souness started off on his ‘Arsenal have no leaders’ speech that he’s been repeating ad nauseum on RTE and Sky for the last 6 weeks or so since Gallas threw his strop at Birmingham and Brady started sulking and saying it was a referee’s decision for the pen rather than a lack of leadership that cost them the tie, it was again Eamo who stepped in to give his take on both sides of the argument.
He said there was ‘something significant’ in what Souness was saying and that Arsenal had fallen short and they can only be judged on the highest possible standards at this level and then made some ridiculous comment about Manchester United being the benchmark for these high stakes games in the latter stages of the Champions League. Manchester United? Last time I checked they’d only reached one European Cup / Champions League final since 1968. The man is a clown.
Was funny watching them last night. RTE pundits never give liverpool any praise for what they do, its always the opposition that were poor, or mistakes form others rather than Liverpool actually doing something good. Dunphy is a clown, and wouldnt pay much attention to him. His love of Man Utd is a bit OTT as well. Going on about hteir leaders and as Bandage said, the benchmark in Europe. In all honesty, Liverpool are the bench mark in Europe for the last 4 years. Some may say I’m stupid saying that, but look at the facts. 2 final appearances and in the semi final again this year. Utd have been extremely poor out of the group stage, since they won in 99, they have only got to the semi finals twice, and probably this year too. Lost a lot of knock out stage games, which kinda disproves Dunphys point, not htat it’d be a hard thing to do.
Didnt Dunphy also have a 2 page spread in some tabloid a month or 2 ago sayin he was wrong about Ronaldo and he is a great player?
I don’t know how anyone could say you were stupid Gman by saying that Liverpool are the benchmark team when it comes to the European Cup. With the possible exception of Milan no one has come close to Liverpool’s record in the competiton in recent times. But never one word mentioned by the RTE guys and it is an absolute disgrace.
This year’s competition was a prime example. They had to win their last three games in the group to qualify and they did. I remember watching them after the last game against Marseille where they won away and the RTE guys just said how poor Marseille were. Not an ounce of praise forthcoming. When Bill asked Giles if he had egg on his face Giles nearly jumped down his throat such was his anger.
In fairness to Brady last night he did congratulate and praise Liverpool for winning and said that they have an amazing winning mentality when it comes to the competiton. Then of course the entire argument shifted to Arsenal and the lack of leaders. Why not talk about Liverpool and how they had reached their third semi in four years and give them the fooking credit they deserve.
Dunphy did indeed have that spread so why can’t he let it go?
Actually, just remembered Giles reaction to Walcotts run and assist. Something along the lines of “I never knew he was capable of anything like that”. Did he see a single game he played for Southampton? He used to do it on a weekly basis.
I really wonder does he watch half the games he lets on to.
No doubt that Liverpool and Milan have been the best teams in Europe in recent years, and it may be no coincidence that they’re two teams with excellent historic records in the competition too. United are miles away from being the benchmark.
Wayne Mardle has just gone 4-0 up on James Wade in the Premier League Darts tonight. He’s had two huge check outs so far, finishing on bull each time. Sid Waddell: ‘This is grievous bodily tungsten!’ What the fook.
Apparently on STV tonight as the huns game was nearing a conclusion and the big clock up in the corner of the screen hit 88 minutes, auld Archie MacPherson in commentary came out with, ‘By my calculations there’s 2 minutes left to be played.’ Well deduced Einstein.
