Summer 2012 Transfer window thread
Rennes have signed Jean Makoun today which would suggest that M’Vila is on the way out. I’d be surprised if he didn’t end up at Arsenal.

Still a lot of dealings to be done at Arsenal so it’s yet another season of transition. There are at least 5 players that should be moved on and need another striker, full back and midfielder.
The only club to make a concrete offer for M’Villa has been Spurs apparently. Arsenal are no longer interested with Wegner having doubts about his temperament.

Delighted with Van Persie signing for Utd. A proven goal scorer, he will be a big addition. A midfielder is still required though. Modric would have been ideal but he looks bound for Madrid. Martinez would be an ideal signing for Utd but they don’t seem interested oddly.

at least wenger can look back at the good old days

Has Wenger ulterior motive for not wanting to invest in big signings? Does he have shares in the club that will stand to benefit him financially if they keep returning profits year on year? He’s also one of the highest paid managers in Europe despite not delivering success for years. Arsenal fans are extremely naive, he should have been chased years ago.

did any of those 3 players win anything at Arsenal? They threw away the chance of winning one league, the time Gallas sat down on the pitch and Eduardo’s broken leg. Went to pieces after it.

Van Persie is a huge loss for Arsenal. You can try and rationalise it whatever way you want but his goalscoring record over the past couple of seasons has been phenomenal. No matter who they bring in, he will be very difficult to replace. Podolski isnt fit to lace his boots for one. Song isnt much of a loss, shit at the job he is supposed to be doing on the pitch.

I think Wenger should be under pressure too. Tactically he is poor and he has been too loyal to many players who arent up to it.

I’d say Van Persie had imagined going somewhere a bit warmer than Manchester

I think Fergie felt under pressure to get in a big name after last season, but as someone else said they would’ve been better off picking up a few Central Midfielders. He must be frantically trying to flog Berbatov at the moment.

Wenger will no doubt unearth a few more gems, polish them up and sell them on to achieve real success somewhere else.

Of course it’s a gamble. Over £20m (which is a huge portion of their transfer budget) on a player with a little over 100 senior goals at club level by the age of 29. He’s clearly a decent player but you can’t just ignore his injury record or the fact that Ferguson has once again spent his budget on a player he knows from the EPL. That £20m could have bought Falcao last summer or Zlatan this summer or could have come close to getting someone like Hulk. None of them are guaranteed to be more successful than Van Persie but Van Persie isn’t guaranteed to be more successful either. Hence it’s a gamble.

Podolski has played the majority of his career in a completely different position but has roughly the same strike rate at club level and at international level. He’s also younger. He wasn’t bought as a replacement for Van Persie but I think there’s too much being made of Van Persie’s “proven” success when he only scored more than 20 goals once.

That’s a weird point. By this statement all transfers are gambles and debate pointless.

This morning I wake up knowing I’d rather be a supporter of a club who bought RVP than one who sold him.

I’d also rather have seen my club spend £22.5m on RVP than a higher price for the Brazilian who went to PSG.

United, over the last few years have been slagged off in the press & by their own fans for not buying proven players. Now they go out and buy one for what in today’s market is not an extreme price and still people slag it off.

Also I’d point out that Uniteds track record of getting players fit is far better than Arsenals over the years and maybe RVP will be less injury prone from now on, and as I said earlier he won’t be expected to carry a team and play All games do will be rested too.

Proven player? He’s 29 and in all honesty only really had one good season, not to mention he has never done anything spectacular in Europe and has flopped at a couple of major international tournaments now - and he’s injury prone and in the last year of his contract. I think he’ll do well at United as he’s a clinical player if given space and chances and given that the defending in the EPL is abysmal and it’s a very easy league to score in should sort that out but they have overpaid for him and his track record with injuries make it even more a gamble. They could have used that money a lot more wisely.

How exactly are United going to line up with Rooney, Kagawa, Valencia, Young and RVP, not to mention Nani, Welbeck and Hernandez in reserve. Only 4 can really start as they will need 2 bodies in central midfield.

Someone remind me how much Fergushun paid for Ashley Young again.

It’s because all transfers are gambles that debate is not pointless. Debate would be pointless if transfers were guaranteed successes.

I’m not saying it’s a dreadful signing by United. Just that it’s a bit of a risk - not in terms of they can’t afford it, more that if it proves to be at the expense of strengthening their midfield in a deeper area, which looks likely, then I think the priorities are wrong. As mentioned above - Javi Martinez would have been an excellent signing for them if they wanted to pass the ball properly through midfield.

22.5m may not be extreme but what about the reported 250k a week wages? That’s a whole lot of money in total for a guy nearing 30 and with only one good season behind him.

They done a great job getting M Owen fit.

United going against the usual transfer policy of signing players from the Villas, Blackburn and Wigans of this world this summer is welcome. Kagawa could well be the deal of the summer. Van Persie wont have any resale value and his signing is very reminiscent of the time United signed a 31 year old Teddy Sheringham. If United can get a couple of good seasons out of Van Persie then I think the transfer fee will have been justified.

Fergie still thinks Giggs and Scholes can play in the big games and until they retire the central midfield issue wont be addressed properly. Fergie is banking on Tom Cleverley to make it this season. He started last season very well but once he got injured he never really got back in the team after that.

I’d imagine he’s also banking on Andersonsonson staying fit.

At least RVP and Henriquez chose the best team in Manchester…

Agreed on that.

I probably said this last season but Anderson needs to step up this season. Anderson was very impressive up until the 6.1 and then got injured in the 2nd half of the season and didn’t get a look in.

Anderson?

Are United fans still harping on about him?

How long has he been there now? Despite looking decent at the start he has failed to deliver on his price tag which I have in my head was in the 20 millions but could be in the 10s. Either way - a lot of dosh.

Think it was aroudn £17m.

The experiment to convert him from an attacking midfielder to a defensive midfielder clearly hasn’t worked. Time to ship him out to whatever Portuguese ot Turkish team Mendes can get to buy him.

Heard Anderson was bought for 20 odd million. He just is very injury prone and needs a full season injury free to prove himself. The days of him and Hargreaves bossing Liverpool at Anfield are a long time ago now.

As opposed to Van Persie
