Statement from Tom Coughlin:
“I met with John Mara and Steve Tisch this afternoon, and I informed them that it is in the best interest of the organization that I step down as head coach. I strongly believe the time is right for me and my family, and as I said, the Giants organization.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as head coach of the New York Football Giants. This is a not a sad occasion for me. I have spent 15 years with this organization as an assistant and head coach and was fortunate to be part of three Super Bowl winning teams. A Lombardi Trophy every five years is an achievement in which we all take great pride.
“Obviously, the past three years have not been what any of us expect, and as head coach, I accept the responsibility for those seasons.
“I think it has been evident these last 12 years here how much pride I take in representing this franchise. I am gratified and proud that we were able to deliver two more Lombardi trophies to the display case in our lobby during that time. That is a tribute to our players and staff, and it was truly fulfilling to be the leader of those teams.
“I appreciate the support of John and his family and Steve and his family, and of Jerry Reese and his staff. I think our organization is a great representation of what I mean when I talk about ‘team’.
“Finally, I would be remiss if I did not thank my wife Judy and our four children and their spouses and our 11 (soon to be 12) grandchildren. None of this would have been possible without their unconditional love and support.”
Coughlin, despite his team causing me great anguish on a couple of occasions, was an all round alright sort and decent guy. Lot of respect for him. Saw his Football Life documentary a few years back and he was very good in that too. His daughter is married to Chris Snee I think it is, a former lineman for the Giants. Wish him all the best for whatever he does next.
Coach Coughlin wants to lead another team. This was an organization being mindful of his great service and achievements and giving him the opportunity to step down. Make no mistake, they want a new coach in place but it’s been handled in a classy manner by one of my three favorite franchises. Coach will be a future Hall of Famer - a great man and a great republican.
I do but it will be no surprise the Skins are favs and are in a great run of form with Cousins and Reed doing a very good Brady and Gronk impression, the Pack have been woeful the last 2 months and cannot get their passing game going plus Lacy is a fat cunt!
Yes - But they also give up plenty of points - I think they are the lowest placed D left? and are particularly poor on defending the pass- Over the last few weeks of the season they just about got passed the Bears/Bills and beat up a poor Philly- While Green Bay have had the Raiders/ Arizona / Vikings - Makes for an interesting game and while Green Bay have been atrocious lately they also have plenty of play-off experience and have Rodgers… i’m leaning towards Green Bay but Washington are the only team with homefield I give a chance to this weekend.
I may have to revise my stance on home teams this weekend… Is Dalton back? While Pittsburgh have an amount of attacking weapons they were desperate against the poorly Ravens and the Browns… the Browns had them in trouble on Sunday and a better outfit would/could have beaten them… Which the Bengals are. The Bengals have a very good defense that will put it up to PIT and if they can shut Brown down they will go a long way to winning this. The teams met in CIN only 3 weeks ago and it was a tight affair until Dalton got injured and then the Steelers pulled away…there was plenty of niggle that day too - before and during the game. You’d still fancy Pittsburg to win but they’ve fallen over the line with a lot of dis-jointed performances over the last few weeks.
No, I just checked it - it was with 5 left in the first quarter - I was sure it was nearer half time … It doesn’t negate that the Steelers have been yo- yoing all season and bar the second half against the Broncos, their back end form has been poor… The AFC teams in general have all been poor over the last number of weeks bar KC, but i don’t think they will trouble anyone. I think it is open for the SeaHawks now.
