I donât get this though. His lawyers were on CBS moaning about the Rooney Rule but the RR for all its flaws had good intentions. The NFL and itâs owners certainly have racism problems but itâs a strange stick to beat them with for something that had good intentions.
One of his criticisms was that coaches now are being more drawn from the offensive side of the ball and QB coaches become OC etc, which black coaches have historically been discriminated from. But the NFL did extend the RR to coordinators.
They made some mealy mouth statement on hires being tied to âmetricsâ but that sounds ridiculous and unachievable.
In terms of Flores himself, you can argue that he himself was the beneficiary of the Bill Bellichick system that has got lots of people jobs but mediocre outcomes.
yeah it is well intended, but he has a point that it becomes a box ticking exercise just to satisfy the criteria of meeting the requirements. Generally, Iâm not a fan of quota rules for jobs, it should be the best one for the job. But there is no doubt that white coaches get preference over black coaches. How that gets fixed seems more like a cultural change and societal issue rather than forcing teams to hire minority coaches. I dont know the answer, but I dont think the Rooney Rule is making any real change despite its intentions.
